Bangladesh won by three wickets (Source: X.com)
BAN vs SL - Live from Delhi, Arun Jaitley Stadium
Bangladesh win by 3 wickets!
A dramatic match comes to an end. We saw history being made today as Mathews became the first batter to get timed out. Bangladesh were given a 280-run target. They lost wickets in the end but were in control throughout the chase, eventually winning by three wickets in the 42nd over.
This win moves Bangladesh to seventh position on the points table, while Sri Lanka drops down to eighth place. Although their qualification chances for the semis are almost nil, this result holds major implications as a Champions Trophy spot is on the line.
Alright. That's it for today. We will come back tomorrow for the Australia versus Afghanistan clash. Do not forget to join us for that. Until then, toodles. Have a great night!
BANGLADESH WIN!
The ball goes past the wicket-keeper down the leg-side for a boundary as Bangladesh win by three wickets. This is their record run-chase against Sri Lanka in ODIs.
Bangladesh require just two runs to win. They are almost there.
Sri Lanka have taken a DRS. The ball has rolled over for a boundary after hitting Tanzim Hasan Sakib's pads. It's looking not out. Yes, the impact is outside. The on-field decision stands.
Twist in the tale!!!
Mehidy Hasan Miraz chips the ball straight to the throat of the long on fielder. Theekshana bags another wicket. Bangladesh still need 11 runs to win with three wickets remaining.
Your time is up, My time is now!
Another six by Hridoy. He has come set from the dressing room.
Theekshana strikes!!!
Yorker by the offie. Mahmudullah fails to get his bat down in time as the bails light up once more. Sri Lanka are not letting this go that easily.
Sri Lankan players and Hridoy come at the loggerheads. Words get exchanged again.
Towhid Hridoy starts off his innings with a six.
Timely Wicket for Sri Lanka!!!
That came back in with the angle. Mushfiqur Rahim looked to work it around third man but found the stumps get rattled in return. Madushanka strikes. Is there any hope left for Sri Lanka?
Runs are flowing. Mahmudullah is putting the finishing touches to the run-chase. Bangladesh sit in the touching distance of a win. 33 runs are needed off 78 balls.
Just over fine leg!
The ball sails just over the fine leg fielder for a maximum. This will release the pressure off Mahmudullah.
Mathews on 🔥
Is it written in the stars for Mathews? He has now cleaned up Shanto as both set batters are dismissed. He single-handedly is infusing life in this game.
Mathews gets his revenge!!!
Leading edge and Shakib is gone. Guess who is the bowler? It's Mathews. He gives Shakib a stare and tells him it's time to go back. A comeback window has opened for Sri Lanka.
STAT ATTACK!
This partnership between Shakib & Shanto is now highest for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka in ODIs surpassing the previous best of 144 runs.
200 UP FOR BANGLADESH!
Shakib and Shanto are putting on a show. 19 runs come off the 30th over. Rajitha has been absolutely belted. Bangladesh are closing in on a massive win.
Peaking at the wrong time 😜
Shakib and Shanto are toying with the bowlers now. The target has been brought down under 100 runs and Sri Lanka are almost out of this match.
The ball is changed again. Sri Lankan players are discussing about this with the umpires. They are not very happy with the ball change.
50 FOR SHAKIB!
Bangladeshi captain is sanding tall, hitting his first fifty in the 2023 World Cup. He is leading the charge and is doing his bit to help his team break their six-match losing streak.
100 Run Partnership between Shanto and Shakib!
50 FOR SHANTO!
He latches onto a short ball and plays another pull that yields four runs to bring up his second fifty of the competition. This has come after six single digit scores.
Bangladesh dominating!
Bangladesh are cruising towards the target. Shakib and Shanto are steadfast at the crease and if they continue to bat another 10 overs, it could be curtains for Sri Lanka.
Shanto is fired up and he is bringing the anger out in his shots. Rajitha is looking off today. He conceded 13 runs in his first over and starts the second one with two boundaries.
50 Run Partnership between Shanto and Shakib!
Shakib has made his intentions clear. He is not letting Maheesh Theekshana settle down and is treating the off-spinner with boundaries.
Shakib and Shanto are batting fluently. Things are looking good for Bangladesh at the moment. But it's still 50:50.
Some words exchanged between Shanto and Sadeera Samarawickrama. Umpire seperated the two. Things heating up in Delhi.
Shakib gets a lifeline as Asalanka at short cover puts his catch down. Mathews could have had his revenge there.
The first powerplay is done and Madushanka has given Sri Lanka a good headstart with two wickets. But Bangladesh are not too far behind in this game.
Shakib and Shanto are finding boundaries at the right moment. Bangladesh need a partnership and the duo need to maintain the run-rate for a longer period.
Madushanka is now the highest wicket-taker in the 2023 World Cup. He has claimed 20 scalps so far in the tournament.
Madushanka bests Litton with a pearler!!!
A seam up delivery by Madushanka that hit Litton on his boot. It's plumb without a doubt. Umpire raises his finger on the LBW appeal.
Now, Mathews has gone to Litton to share some words. It's a conjecture but he must be reminding the Bangladeshi that clocking is ticking...
Litton showing his range!
Litton is taking down Kasun Rajitha. After a hitting a six square of the wicket, he tonks another one straight down the ground. And he is experiencing cramps, I suppose. The physio is attending him.
Najmul Hossain Shanto is standing well out the crease to negate the swing. Let's see how he goes about it. Meanwhile, Madushanka has bolwed a maiden against him.
UPDATE ON MATHEWS' TIMED OUT DISMISSAL!
That's a drop. Litton pulls the ball straight to the fine leg fielder but he just could not hold onto it. This results in a four and Litton seems to have injured himself. It's all happening out there.
First wicket falls!!!
Madushanka's dream run in the powerplay continues. Tanzid got into the shot early. The ball was moving away from him and he just drove it high in the air for a catch at cover point.
Tanzid nonchalantly leans into the drive and hits the ball over point for a boundary. That was just a starter. He plays an ever better shot in the following delivery. The southpaw uses his feet well and sends the ball for another boundary at mid-on. Great start for Bangladesh.
It's time for the run-chase. Bangladesh openers Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan have walked out. Dilshan Madushanka is steaming in. Let's get down to the business.
Before Mathews' timed out - 135/4
After Mathews' timed out - 279/10
How do you see this? Sri Lanka have made a good recovery, I reckon. They have the total that can be defended.
That’s the end of the first innings. Sri Lanka, after being asked to bat first, have posted 279 on the board. It was a roller-coaster of an innings as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals but Charith Asalanka stood tall against Bangladesh’s bowlers and took his side to a competitive total.
RAJITHA GOES OUT!
SIX AND GONE!
Asalanka holes out in the deep. A good catch from Das in the deep and that ends a fine knock from Asalanka. He falls on 108.
A CENTURY FOR CHARITH ASALANKA!
That's a hundred for Asalanka. What an innings from the Sri Lanka No. 5! Deserves all the claps. His teammates applaud his innings, and so does the Delhi crowd.
WICKET!!!!! Theekshana departs!
The partnership has been broken and Bangladesh will be relieved to see the back of Theekshana. Dushmantha Chameera walks out to bat next.
SIX!!!!!
SIXXXX!!! Charith Asalanka moves to 87 with a smart six! Ahort ball once again from Tanzim Hasan Sakib but the direction is completely wrong as he bowls it down leg.
Is that the wicket?
The partnership has been broken. TV umpire is checking it. Rahim had a couple of goes at the stumping but lifted one of the stumps. DDS is walking off. Umpire Erasmus wants to have a look at it. Rahim fumbled on the collection, recovered in a hurry and removed the stumps even before he gathered the ball, but Rahim did well to uproot the stump and lift it. OUT. Good presence of mind from Mushfiqur Rahim.
Sri Lanka looks frustrated! 🫨
First time in international cricket timed out has happened.... The closest to this was in 2006-07 Test series where Sourav Ganguly came into bat six minutes later but Graeme Smith did not appeal.
TIME-OUT!
Angelo Mathews gets timed-out and departs without playing a single ball.
This time Sakib strikes!!
Tanzim Hasan Sakib, remember this name. You will be hearing his name for quite some time now. A skiddy delivery from a skiddy bowler and Pathum Nissanka's solid stay is over. The SL opener goes flirting with a wide delivery and pays the price as the ball kisses the inside edge to land onto the woods. Three down for Lanka, Tigers have tails up.
Shakib strikes...
You want a breakthrough, call Shakib. Bangladesh's skipper again provides the breakthrough and dismisses his opposite number on his third ball. Shoriful Islam with a brilliant catch in the deep. Skipper has skipper!
Nissanka's positive batting (so far) steal the show
At present, Sri Lanka are 52/1 in 10 overs and are looking okay with the long middle phase coming our way. Kusal Mendis may have struggled from one end but Pathum Nissanka's 32-ball 39 has brought momentum's way. So far in the play, Taskin Ahmed and Tanzim Hasan Sakib have been brilliant in testing the batters. Let's see how the spinner take it forward from here.
BAN stamp their bowling class
With Kusal Perera's wicket, the Bangladesh bowlers have made sure to keep a lid on the runs as well. On a flat that has been assisting batting in this tournament, SL are still to find a way to get the momemtum in their batting innings. After six overs, SL are at 29 for the loss of one wicket.
Rahim Goes Flying!
Mushfiqur Rahim takes a sensational catch in the opening over of the day to send Sri Lanka on the back foot. Sri Lanka lose Kusal Perera early, yet again!
Shoriful gets the breakthrough. Sri Lanka are 6/1 after 1.3 overs.
THE MATCH IS ABOUT TO BEGIN SOON!
