England versus South Africa - Live Blog from Mumbai!

20:40 (IST) Oct 21

It may have been a one-sided affair but both the innings were thoroughly entertaining. It started off with Hendricks and van der Dussen setting the platform for Klaasen and Jansen to tee off in the end as South Africa reached a total of 399 runs.

The batting blitz was followed by a bowling masterclass, leaving no room for England to make match out for themselves in the chase. And to top it off, we got to witness a Wood and Atkinson special with the bat.

England sink further on the points table to ninth position, while South Africa retain the third place.

We now have an India game tomorrow as they will be up against their nemesis New Zealand in Dharamsala. Tune in as we bring the live details of the action in another blog. For today, good bye. Have a great night!

20:32 (IST) Oct 21

GAME.SET.MATCH

Keshav Maharaj finally breaks through as England's frustration ends with Atkinson's wicket. Reece Topley will not come out to bat and hence, South Africa will claim a 229 run-win.

20:28 (IST) Oct 21

50-run partnership between Atkinson and Wood!

The duo is showing mirror to England batters. And as I write, they have now forged the highest run-partnership for the ninth wicket for England in an ODI World Cup.

20:26 (IST) Oct 21

Another catch put down!

The England fielders seemed to have made a plan within themselves to give more game time to their bowlers. #JUSTKIDDING

20:22 (IST) Oct 21

Bees stay away from Ishan Kishan!

20:19 (IST) Oct 21

And now Quinton de Kock spills a chance and also the opportunity to enter into record books as the defecit of England's defeat will be under 275.

20:13 (IST) Oct 21

Okay, South Africa can commit a mistake. Reeza Hendricks just dropped the catch of Mark Wood, who is clearing the boundary on will. #PROMOTEWOOD

20:10 (IST) Oct 21

Record in the making?

275 runs is the biggest margin of defeat in an ODI World Cup. Can South Africa make this record their own tonight?

20:05 (IST) Oct 21

South Africa can do no wrong!!!

Athletic Rabada pounces on to the ball to complete a remarkable diving catch. Ngidi dismisses David Willey after conceding a six but this has to be Rabada's wicket.

19:58 (IST) Oct 21

Coetzee bests Rashid!!!

This youngster is having a field night. Rashid throws his bat a wide short pitch delivery only to nick it to the man at slip. An early finish is on the cards as England are already seven down in 15.1 overs.

19:54 (IST) Oct 21

It's the fight for the Net Run Rate now. For all practical purposes, it is fair to say that South Africa will win this. Their focus now should be on increasing NRR, while England would want to limit the damage.

England 81/6 in 14 overs.

19:45 (IST) Oct 21

Injury concern for India!

19:44 (IST) Oct 21

Surely!

19:40 (IST) Oct 21

Coetzee rattles Brook!!!

Brook has reviewed it but he knows he is out. He is already walking back. Coetzee does him with raw pace as the ball thuds on to his pads.

19:36 (IST) Oct 21

Buttler bids adieu!!!

South Africa are bossing England. Unreal annihilation this. Coetzee generates bounce off the pitch as the ball moves a tad bit to take the outside edge off Buttler's bat.

19:31 (IST) Oct 21

South Africa extends domination!

After dominating in the first innings, South Africa have started off from where they left in the break, ending whatever chances remained of an England win. Yes, Buttler and Brook are looking good but for how long they will be able to continue with required rate already going north of 8.

England 67/4 in 10 overs.

19:21 (IST) Oct 21

What is happening? England are sinking!!!

Stokes is a goner. He flicks the ball back to Kagiso Rabada who grabs it neatly. It's getting over...

England 38/4 in 8.1 overs.

19:08 (IST) Oct 21

It's OUT!!!

A successful review for South Africa. There was a faint edge and Malan has to go. Jansen celebrates his second wicket in the match. England are going down without a fight.

19:04 (IST) Oct 21

South Africa apply early pressure!

England are already two wickets down in the chase of 400 runs. It's all upon their Miracle Man Ben Stokes to save them from the crisis.

England 24/2 in 5 overs.

18:58 (IST) Oct 21

WICKET!!!

South Africa are beating England tactically here. There was a leg slip for Joe Root who picks up the fielder there. Marco Jansen set him up perfectly. Everything is going wrong for England at the moment.

18:48 (IST) Oct 21

Bairstow throws it away! Ngidi strikes!

England lose Bairstow. The man was set up at backward square-leg and Bairstow top edges a flick straight to him meters in front of the boundary.

18:45 (IST) Oct 21

South Africa reviews!

Malan swings it across the line and gets hit on his leg. And umpire's call saves him.

18:39 (IST) Oct 21

JONNNYYY BAIRSTOWWW!!!

Bairstow is not going to let it go easily. England are set on achieving a record run-chase and he plays a hoick down the leg side to start off the innings with a maximum.

18:31 (IST) Oct 21

TIME FOR THE RUN-CHASE!

South African players have entered the team huddle. England openers are walking down the stairs.

18:26 (IST) Oct 21

These are some numbers!

18:04 (IST) Oct 21

Absolute pelting from South Africa!

The Proteas finish at 399/7. This has been some display of power hitting by the South African batters, led by Klaasen and Jansen. Klaasen scored a scintillatimg 61-ball century and was amply supported by Jansen, who remained unbeaten at 75 off 42 balls. England need to bat out of their skins to win this contest. We'll be back in 30 minutes for the England chase.

17:56 (IST) Oct 21

Carnage, carnage everywhere! There is no hiding for the England bowlers. Every ball is getting dispatched in the stands. Jansen has taken the mantle from Klaasen and is dealing in sixes at the moment. Phew, what an innings! SA 386-5 inside 49 overs.

17:46 (IST) Oct 21

Klass is permanent! A majestic hundred from Klaasen!

This has been an exhibition of brute hitting from the Proteas batter. A 61-ball hundred in a World Cup game. Take a bow, Klaasen! England had no answer to his Klaasen-storm!

17:44 (IST) Oct 21

Fiery, toe-crushing yorker by Wood!

That was too hot to handle for Klaasen! Full and crushing onto the toe from Wood as the ball hits him on the legs. Klaasen is down, and looks rattled by it.

17:36 (IST) Oct 21

It's raining sixes in Mumbai!

Klaasen storm has taken over Wankhede as England look toothless at the moment. The dashing batter is etching towards a memorable hundred. There is no stopping Klaasen at the moment. England need a magic moment from somewhere.

17:26 (IST) Oct 21

Klassy Klaasen!!!

THREEE BOUNDARIES and A BIGGIE Off Reece Topley's 8th over. 19 runs coming off that over. Heinrich Klaasen is unleashing his beast mode! This is a proper cricketing shot and gets a six. Full Monty for his efforts.

16:51 (IST) Oct 21

Wickets tumbling now! England back in the mix!

Topley has two wickets after coming from a mini injury break during the match. Miller smashes the ball as hard as he could, but finds Ben Stokes at mid-off. The ball travelled fast and Stokes was impeccable with the catch. Seems like there is a twist in the tale.

16:49 (IST) Oct 21

And now Willey's struggling with his knee, he's walking off the field. England are getting into deep waters.  FYI: He still has two more overs in his bank. South Africa, on the other hand, are enjoying the run-fest at Mumbai.

16:42 (IST) Oct 21

Markram Goneeeee!!

Topley comes after the injury and traps the big fish, Aiden Markram! Not the best of deliveries, as he bowls it on the pads. Markram flicks it uppishly and finds Bairstow at deep mid wicket. Bairstow gave an injury scare as he tumbled after grabbing the catch.

15:56 (IST) Oct 21

Chopped on! Rashid strikes once again!

Reeza Hendricks was playing so, so well, and was well on the course to achieve a phenomenal hundred. But a lapse of concentration led to his wicket. He tried to slash the leg-break, but got an inside-edge onto the stumps. England are back in the contest. SA are 164/3.

15:47 (IST) Oct 21

400 on the cards?

Small boundaries, placid track and a lethargic England attack. With plenty of firepower left in the tank, South Africa should aim for a big score

15:35 (IST) Oct 21

OneCricket curse strikes!

Just when we wrote that Van der Dussen is on his way to a big score, he departs. After a slow start from Adil Rashid, he finally gets the last laugh, getting the big wicket. Van der Dussen fails to clear the mid wicket region with his slog and found the fielder. Nonetheless, a superb innings by the Proteas batter. SA- 126/2 in 20 overs.

15:22 (IST) Oct 21

Fifty for RASSIE VAN DER DUSSEN! The ever-consistent Rassie van der Dussen gets to another 50. This one comes off 49 balls. He needs to make it big. And Reeza Hendricks assists his partner as well!! Came in place of Temba Bavuma and makes it count. Also, the partnership between these two has crossed 100. SA - 107/1 in 17 overs.

15:12 (IST) Oct 21

Drinks break here in the hot Mumbai afternoon.

Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen have batted beautifully and are well set in their 40s. This is how exactly the Wankhede surface plays, and so far so good.

15:06 (IST) Oct 21

Reece Topley is out off the field amidst the English bowlers' hammering. No plan is working for Jos Buttler & company as Hendricks & van der Dussen are stitching a fine partnership for the second wicket. 83/1 after 14 overs.

14:32 (IST) Oct 21

Topley looks injured!

Just when the left-arm seamer was starting to find his groove, he seems to have an injury. The physio is out there to treat him. England will hope it's not a serious issue.

14:17 (IST) Oct 21

Just the start England wanted!

The England new ball bowlers haven't allowed the Proteas batters to free their arms. They have picked up an early wicket which has jolted the South African team. SA 8/1 inside 4 overs.

13:59 (IST) Oct 21

Reece vs de Kock - Here we go at Wankhede...

First ball boundary. Second ball - appeal. The umpire is unmoved, but Buttler goes upstairs. AND THAT WAS A GREAT DRS TAKEN BY THE ENGLISH SKIPPER.

De Kock didn't really move his feet and went at it with an expansive drive but he got a thin outside edge through to the keeper.

13:47 (IST) Oct 21

Debashis: Yes, I think the Englishmen have committed a mistake by opting to bowl under such hot and humid conditions. They have three top-quality pacers, who would've loved to bowl under the lights at this venue.

13:46 (IST) Oct 21

Arjun: A quick prediction - the day will be full of runs and South Africa will thrash the defending champs today. Any takes on that, fellas?

13:36 (IST) Oct 21

ENG vs SA - Playing XIs

England: Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (c/wk), David Willey, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson, Reece Topley

South Africa: Quinton de Kock (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram (c), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada

13:31 (IST) Oct 21

Toss time - ENG vs SA

England have won the toss and they will bowl first. Three changes confirmed - Ben Stokes, Willey and young Atkinson come in!

Just one change in the SA camp - Temba Bavuma out, Reeza Hendricks comes in.

13:30 (IST) Oct 21

JUST IN: Temba Bavuma will miss today's clash against England due to illness. Aiden Markram will lead SA in Mumbai.

12:37 (IST) Oct 21

Have heard from a personal England source that the defending champions have left out Livingstone, Curran and Woakes from their playing XI. Ben Stokes will make a comeback, and England will also go with Willey and Atkinson in their playing XI.

12:05 (IST) Oct 21

We all need the answer to a huge question - whether The Miracle-Man Ben Stokes finally play today? We have an answer for that - YES, HE WOULD MAKE A COMEBACK from his hip today against the Proteas.

Toss in an hour and 25 minutes' time!

12:01 (IST) Oct 21

ENG vs SA - Team Previews

England

For all their depth and explosiveness as a batting unit, England continue to evoke vibes of a flat-deck side, which falters the moment there is any lateral movement or turn available off the surface for opposition bowlers.

However, a true-paced deck in Mumbai then will present England with a bright opportunity to get back into the World Cup with their strength. They need an above-par score on the board for their bowling unit to punch above its weight.

It would boost them no end that the fixture at the Wankhede is set to be a comeback game for England's famed match-winner Ben Stokes after missing the first three matches with a sore hip.

South Africa

South Africa couldn't shed the chokers' tag with their unexpected loss to the Dutch in Dharamshala but would like to believe it was only a hiccup that wouldn't dent the rest of their campaign. The Proteas failed tactically to the Netherlands, who managed to hit the stumps decisively more times with their line on a two-paced surface.

That is not the kind of detail they could afford to miss again versus the Englishmen, especially with the track at the iconic Wankhede Stadium offering one of the flattest surfaces in the country and being a paradise for battership under lights.

11:56 (IST) Oct 21

The World Cup fever has now entered the city of dreams. Good morningggggg, Mumbaiiii! It's Saturday, and it's time for England versus South Africa at the prestigious Wankhede Stadium.

ENG vs SA live from Mumbai, and OneCricket is set with another live blog with all the updates right.
