Tough for USA to Host ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Matches

As the cricketing world begins to gear up for yet another enthralling T20 Word Cup Edition in 2024, doubts over USA's hosting rights begin to loom larger. The International Cricket Council recently announced that the 2024 T20 World Cup is expected to be jointly hosted by Cricket West Indies and USA Cricket.

While USA Cricket were announced as the "co-host", the majority of the heavy lifting is being done by Cricket West Indies (CWI) and International Cricket Council (ICC).

In an exclusive interview with News18 CricketNext, the former interim chairman of USA Cricket, Dr Atul Rai admits that his country is not in a state to host the big event. He further cited that the lack of proper facilities can pose a very problematic situation for the ICC to handle.

“There are no real facilities in the USA which are ready to host ICC World Cup event. It’s a very tough situation.”

ICC is aware of the oblivious challenges facing the associate nation. With no reliable cricketing infrastructure, it will be up to the governing body to decide whether they would want to invest money in creating temporary facilities.

“Not really. I don’t think so. Not where we stand right now. But then again ICC has to make the final call. But without proper infrastructure, nothing is going to happen. We don’t have any existing facilities so it’s up to the ICC whether they will invest money in some makeshift venue and even host some games. But it’s a very tough situation, to be honest. ICC has recognised that too."

Given the current state of affairs, ICC is clearly discontent with the standard of existing infrastructure that has been in place by USA Cricket. The ICC is in a divine quest to offer the associate nations a chance to host the World Cup in a bid to globalize the game.  Although the initiative is good but USA Cricket is clearly not equal to the task.

The governing body has taken stock of the situation but is yet to make an official announcement on this ongoing issue. But upon making an initial observation, it is very clear that the USA Cricket may be at a potential risk of losing out on hosting the upcoming T20 World Cup.
