Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has pushed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for expanding the cricketing infrastructure in the state. The veteran politician attended the closing ceremony of the UP T20 League 2025 season at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, where he cited the state’s huge population and talent pool as his primary reason behind increasing the number of domestic teams.
Interestingly, states like Maharashtra and Gujarat already have multiple teams representing them in Indian domestic tournaments like Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
CM Yogi Adityanath ‘Bats’ For Uttar Pradesh Talents
UP CM Yogi Adityanath was invited at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the UP T20 League 2025 season on Saturday, September 6. Speaking at the ceremony, the veteran politician batted for the expansive cricketing talent pool within his state, claiming that Uttar Pradesh deserves at least four domestic teams instead of a solitary side.
Helming the most populous Indian state (with a population of 25 crore people), CM Yogi Adityanath said:
“My message to BCCI is that in this state, there is just a solitary team. There should be at least four domestic teams from UP, the state deserves this opportunity.”
Yogi Adityanath added that the emerging talents in Uttar Pradesh must receive an expanded platform, claiming that the state has already provided some “excellent international players” to India across all sports.
Compatible with Adityanath’s claims, star cricketers like Suresh Raina, Mohammad Kaif, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, RP Singh, Piyush Chawla as well as active players like Rinku Singh and T20 World Cup winner Kuldeep Yadav have all hailed from Uttar Pradesh.
Nonetheless, Yogi Adityanath’s speech coincided with the final of the UP T20 League 2025 season, where Kashi Rudras defeated Meerut Mavericks by eight wickets and 26 balls to spare. Chasing 145 for a win, openers Abhishek Goswami (57* off 45) and Karan Sharma (65 off 31) packed sizzling half-centuries after exceptional bowling displays from Kartik Yadav, Shivam Mavi and Sunil Kumar.
