A social media post claiming that Gautam Gambhir has announced his resignation from the position of Team India's head coach is circulating online. However, this assertion is entirely false.
Amid online criticism surrounding his decision-making and India’s abysmal form in Tests, the viral post was shared from an unverified account impersonating Gambhir, stating that he is “officially stepping away from the cricket world.” The post further claimed that he is leaving the game with no potential future involvement.
'I gave everything I had to this game': Read the X post
Following India's poor performance on the third day's play, a post claiming Gambhir's resignation from the head coach's post went viral on X.
"Today, I am officially stepping away from the cricket world both as a coach and any future involvement. Honestly, the constant stream of criticism and trolling has simply become exhausting. I gave everything I had to this game, but the atmosphere around it, particularly online, makes it clear that my time is up."
"I leave with my records intact and my head high. Wishing Indian Cricket all the very best for its future endeavors. May you find continued success. Thank you for the memories," the post read.
It is important to note that this post was not posted from Gautam Gambhir’s real account. The timing of the post, however, makes the matter serious, with India on the verge of registering another humiliating Test loss after a 30-run defeat in the first Test of the two-match series.
Why could Gautam Gambhir's resignation rumour become a reality?
Ever since Gautam Gambhir was appointed India's head coach in July 2024, the Men in Blue have played 18 Test matches and won only 7. Two games ended in a draw, and India has lost nine Tests.
A team that was on the road to becoming a dominant side in the longest format of the game recently suffered brutal losses. India have only managed series wins over Bangladesh and West Indies. New Zealand pulled off a heist, whitewashing India 3-0 in 2024. It was India's first series defeat at home since 2012.
Apart from that, despite showing promising signs in the Australia tour, winning first Test in Perth, India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1. Their performance in Test continued to decline after that.
Now, yet another inevitable home defeat has raised questions around Gautam Gambhir's capability and contention with the national team setup.
No doubt, India's performance under GG in Test has been irresolute and concerning. However, they have done brilliantly in white-ball cricket, winning the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup in 2025.
