Actor Rajkummar Rao, known for seamlessly transitioning between intense dramas, rom-coms, and thrillers, is stepping into the shoes of cricketing legend Sourav Ganguly for his next big project. However, fans eager to see Rao on the pitch as the iconic former Indian captain will have to wait a little longer, as the actor recently revealed that the film’s shoot has been postponed to 2026.
Rajkummar Rao Shares Update On Ganguly's Biopic
In an interview with Mid-day, the 'Stree' actor opened up about the magnitude of preparation required for the role. While he has undergone cricket training before, most notably for the 2024 sports drama Mr & Mrs Mahi, Rao emphasized that replicating Sourav Ganguly’s unique left-handed batting style is proving to be an entirely new challenge.
While I know how to play cricket, being a left-handed batter is a different ball game altogether. The muscle memory is all about being a right-handed batter,” Rao admitted. “So, I need some time to practise.”
The 40-year-old actor added that though shooting was initially scheduled to begin this year, the timeline was shifted to 2026 to allow more time for both physical preparation and script development.
“Everybody is taking a lot of care in recreating Dada’s life for a theatrical experience. We’ve pushed the shooting to next year, as we needed some time for the prep. It’s a big responsibility to play one of our most iconic heroes in cricket,” he said.
Rao also shared that he has intentionally avoided meeting Sourav Ganguly so far. “I have deliberately not met Dada yet. I want to meet him when we fully get into prep mode,” he noted. He also added that he wants to approach the character with a clean slate before absorbing Ganguly’s personal insights.
It is important to mention that the opportunity to play Ganguly reportedly came Rao’s way after his performance in Mr & Mrs Mahi 2024, where he portrayed a failed cricketer-turned-coach opposite Janhvi Kapoor.
The film based on the life of Sourav Ganguly is still untitled, and its script is currently in development. The makers are reportedly leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the story does justice to Ganguly’s cricketing legacy and personal journey.
Currently, Rajkummar Rao is riding high on the success of Maalik, which features an ensemble cast including Manushi Chhillar, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Huma Qureshi, Saurabh Shukla, and Medha Shankar.
