England pulled off a remarkable 22-run win over India in a gripping Day 5 finish at Lord’s to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match Test series. Post-match, captain Ben Stokes provided a dose of laughter, sharing a humorous moment with teammate Jofra Archer that left reporters in splits.

Ben Stokes Leaves Reporters In Splits

After England sealed the victory by bowling out India for 170 in their final innings, Stokes praised the bowlers for holding their nerve, especially Archer, who returned to the Test side after more than four years and picked up crucial wickets of Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar. But it was Stokes’ light-hearted locker-room anecdote that became the moment of the day.

Speaking to reporters, Stokes recalled a hilarious mix-up by the pacer who returned to Tests after more than four years.

"I just said to him (Archer) this morning, 'You know what today is?' Oh yeah. There was that highlight package from when India knocked off like 300 odd back in the day, when (Sourav), he thought that was the World Cup final as well. He thought that was six years today. Genuine," revealed the skipper. His comments elicited sharp laughter from the reporters, after which he went on to reveal how he corrected his 'confused' teammate.

"I was like, no. That World Cup that we won. He was, 'Oh, that one.' Absolute beauty that boy," said the captain.

The comment sent laughter rippling through the press room. The England skipper had to correct his teammate.

Monday (July 15) marked exactly six years since England’s historic 2019 ICC World Cup triumph, also at Lord’s, where they beat New Zealand in a dramatic super over. While most of the squad remembered the moment with pride, Archer’s brief moment of confusion added an amusing twist to the occasion.

Match Recap: England Prevail In Nerve-Wracking

Batting first, England posted a competitive 387 in the first innings, thanks to Joe Root’s fluent 104 and supporting knocks from Jamie Smith (51), Ollie Pope (44), and Brydon Carse (56). India fought back with the ball in the second innings, bowling England out for just 192.

Set a target of 370, India looked to be in contention, but England’s bowlers, led by Stokes (3/48 in 24 overs) and Archer, applied pressure relentlessly. The visitors ultimately folded for 170, falling short by just 22 runs. This win gives England a 2-1 series advantage with two matches remaining.
