A new biopic on India's very own 'dada' is on the cards and Bollywood and cricket fans were abuzz with who should take on the role of India's iconic ex-captain. Clearing the clouds Sourav Ganguly himself has shed light on his upcoming biopic, revealing that Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao is slated to portray him on the big screen.
Earlier, speculation had already been rife in Bollywood about who would embody the charismatic ex-captain, with names such as Ayushmann Khurrana, Ranbir Kapoor, and Prosenjit Chatterjee previously mentioned. However, Sourav Ganguly also forewarned that it will take at least a year for the movie to be premiered on the big screens.
Sourav Ganguly reveals date issues with Rajkumar Rao
Speaking to the media in Bardhaman, West Bengal, Ganguly remarked, "From what I've heard, Rajkummar Rao will play the role but there are issues of dates...so it will take more than a year to hit the screens."
Ganguly's stellar career
Ganguly, who captained India in 113 Tests and 311 ODIs, amassed 18,575 runs during his international career. The left-handed batter, fondly known as the Prince of Kolkata, later became the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and was appointed as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) last October.
Under his leadership, India secured 21 Test wins and reached the final of the 2003 World Cup. The former skipper also contributed his expertise on the BCCI’s technical and Cricket Advisory Committees alongside stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman before retiring in 2008 with over 18,000 international runs.
Rajkumar Rao fit to portray 'dada' on the silver screen
The news of Ganguly’s biopic has added to the buzz following earlier biopic projects on Indian cricket icons like MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar. On the silver screen, Rajkummar Rao is all set to appear in the film Bhool Chuk Maaf, which also stars Wamiqa Gabbi.
Nevertheless with Rajkumar Rao's experience in biopics and with Ganguly’s illustrious career, from his historic debut century at Lord’s to his iconic shirt-waving celebrations, poised to be captured in the film, the biopic is anticipated to be a fitting tribute to one of Indian cricket’s most influential figures.
