Shubman Gill delivered a masterclass in composure, scoring an unbeaten 101 to steer India to a six-wicket win over Bangladesh in their ICC Champions Trophy opener in Dubai. The vice-captain's patient knock anchored Men in Blue's innings amidst a tumbling middle order and paved the path for the win.

The 25-year-old’s eighth ODI century, achieved in just 51 innings, solidified his status as the fastest Indian to the milestone, eclipsing cricketing maestro's records including Sachin Tendulkar's in the historic list.

India book first win in Champions Trophy 2025

Bangladesh’s decision to bat first backfired spectacularly after a top-order collapse left them reeling at 35/5 within the powerplay. Axar Patel (3/44) spearheaded India’s early dominance, nearly securing a hat-trick had Rohit Sharma not dropped a regulation slip catch.

A gritty 154-run partnership between Towhid Hridoy (102*) and Jaker Ali (68) resurrected Bangladesh’s innings, with Hridoy battling cramps to score his maiden ODI century. Mohammed Shami (5/53) halted their momentum, dismantling the tail to restrict Bangladesh to 228.

India finish chase with hiccups

India’s chase began aggressively, with Rohit (41 off 36) and Shubman Gill forging a 50-run stand before Taskin Ahmed broke through. Despite brief stumbles from Shreyas Iyer (15) and Axar Patel (8), Gill anchored the innings with trademark poise, combining with KL Rahul (41*) in an unbroken 87-run partnership. Gill’s century, coupled with Rahul’s calculated aggression, sealed the win with ease.

What's ahead for Gill?

Gill’s 125-ball knock proved pivotal on a tricky surface as India chased down a modest 229-run target with 21 balls remaining. The vice-captain’s recent dominance continued after a Player of the Series performance against England, further cementing his role as India’s batting linchpin.
