The Champions Trophy 2025 began on February 19, 2025, as Pakistan faced off against New Zealand in the tournament opening game. A particular Pakistan fan paid tribute to former legendary Indian captain, MS Dhoni by donning a special mask.

Pakistan made history on February 19 by inaugurating the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 edition on its soil after a wait of 29 years. The hosts clashed with New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi.

New Zealand opted to bat first with Will Young hitting a magnificent century. Tom Latham also hit a half-century as the Kiwis are on their way to a comprehensive total.

MS Dhoni die-hard supporter spotted in Pakistan

A Pakistani fan stole the show with an innovative homage to MS Dhoni during the opening match of the Champions Trophy.

A fan was spotted in a golden attire with Dhoni’s mask on his face. The moment quickly went viral, drawing admiration from both Indian and Pakistani fans. 

However, team India will not be travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025 due to security reasons. The tournament was also moved to a hybrid model, that is, India would be playing all its matches in Dubai, UAE.

On February 20, 2025, India will play their first Group A match against Bangladesh.

In spite of the harsh competition between India and Pakistan, Sarfaraz Ahmed, former Pakistan captain, unveiled the healthy camaraderie between players from both nations. 

During an interview, Sarfaraz asserted that players from both countries have a friendly relationship off the field and on the field, especially during ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup. 

He remembers instances when cricketers such as MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Yuvraj Singh would share an evening with Pakistani cricketers such as Shoaib Malik and Shadab Khan, talking about cricket and life away from cricket.
