When Prithvi Shaw burst onto the scene, he was compared with Sachin Tendulkar and was touted to become the next big thing in Indian cricket. The batter made his Test debut in 2018 against the West Indies and when he performed well against them, hopes increased as fans believed they have found the next Sachin.

However, Destiny had some other plans as the batter was dropped from the team after a string of low scores and the Mumbai batter also had some off-field issues which led to his outcast from the domestic team as well.

He played for a few seasons from the Delhi Capitals but after being released ahead of the mega auction, last year, the batter went unsold as Shaw even stated that he went into depression. Now, in an exclusive interview with Dainik Jagran's Abhishek Tripathi, the talented batter opened up on his life journey and also reckoned that his life is similar to that of Jethalal from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma.

 "I'm like Jethalal from Tarak Mehta. Controversies chase me without doing anything," Shaw said to Abhishek Tripathi.

Why did Shaw compare himself with Jethalal?

For starters, Jethalal is a popular TV character from the show, Taarak Mehta Ka Oooltah Chashma. In that show, Dilip Joshi, who plays Jethalal is a businessman and controversies follow him at every step of his life. Be it with his father or be it with his neighbours, Jethalal is always involved in some or the other problems.

Similarly, wherever Shaw goes, controversies follow. The Cricketer tries to lead a normal life but just when he feels everything is going right, something bad happens to him.

Prithvi Shaw controversies over the years

  • As Prithvi Shaw struggled to battle injury setbacks, a harmless cough syrup completely ruined his reputation. During the 2019 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shaw's samples were collected as a part of BCCI's anti-doping procedure. However, the opener's sample had traces of terbutaline, a substance banned in the WADA's list of illegal substances. 
  • Hence, as per norms, BCCI handed Shaw an 8-month ban for violating doping regulations, and accordingly, Shaw missed the first half of the 2018-209 domestic season
  • Prithvi Shaw found himself in a major social media controversy in February 2023 when he was accused of assault by social media influencer, Sapna Gill. The incident reportedly took place in a nightclub in Mumbai, where Shaw allegedly refused to take a selfie with the influencer. 
  • The matter hit off when the influencer and her friends allegedly attacked Shaw's car with a baseball bat, leading to a police complaint being filed by Shaw's friend. Eventually, the incident became a media sensation.
