Rohit Sharma, the ever-smiling and easygoing cricketer known for keeping the Indian team’s mood light and lively, has officially retired from Test cricket. Though fans hoped he’d play a bit longer, especially after showing excitement for the England tour earlier this year, the announcement came quite casually on May 7 and it surprised many.
To begin with, many cricket followers saw this coming. After a disappointing performance in Australia both as a batter and captain, Rohit, now 38, was under pressure. However, Rohit still gave fans hope in an interview, where he talked about his plans for the England tour and sounded motivated.
But things changed quickly, and soon after, he dropped the news that he was stepping away from Test cricket. No dramatic press conference, just a quiet goodbye.
Gambhir Jokes About Rohit Sharma’s Test Exit
Recently, Rohit’s retirement came up again in a funny and friendly way on The Kapil Sharma Show. The show featured India head coach Gautam Gambhir, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, and cricketers Yuzvendra Chahal and Abhishek Sharma.
In a playful moment, Kapil asked Pant who in the team acts like the “Jethani”, the one who calls the shots and bosses everyone around. Pant quickly replied, “Rohit bhai is like that. He comes on strong.”
Everyone laughed, and then Gambhir added with a smile, “Ab toh retire ho gaya. Haan haan, ab le lo uska naam.”
Rohit Sharma’s Test career was full of ups and downs, but he ended with impressive numbers. In 67 matches, he scored 4301 runs at an average of 40.57. He notched up 12 centuries and 18 fifties. He even captained India in the World Test Championship final in 2023, although India lost to Australia in that match.
Even though the Mumbai star batter is done with red-ball cricket, he’s still active in the shorter formats. In the recent IPL 2025 season, he scored 418 runs in 15 innings with a solid strike rate of 149.29, including four half-centuries. This shows he still has plenty to offer.
India vs Bangladesh White-Ball Series Uncertain
Rohit was also expected to be part of the white-ball series against Bangladesh in August. However, as of July 4, reports suggest the tour might not happen as planned due to tensions between the two countries. The series was supposed to include three ODIs and three T20Is, but it’s still up in the air.
