West Indies leg-spinner Yannic Cariah has undergone successful surgery to repair a fractured nose sustained during training prior to their first match in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers against the United States of America (USA). The surgery was performed in Harare on Thursday, and Cariah is now under the care of Cricket West Indies' medical team.

The decision regarding his participation in the tournament will depend on his recovery rate, according to CWI.

A spokesperson for the team confirmed that the surgical procedure took place in Harare on Thursday evening. Cariah will remain with the squad while receiving medical support during his recovery. The medical team will assess his recovery in the coming days to make a decision on his return to play.

The absence of Cariah will be felt by the West Indies team, as he showcased impressive form in the pre-CWC Qualifiers matches. He demonstrated his bowling skills by claiming figures of 4/46 against Scotland and 4/58 against the United Arab Emirates in consecutive games. Since his debut against New Zealand in August 2022, Cariah has featured in eight ODl matches, picking up a total of nine wickets.

Reifer Sustains Injury but Remains Committed to Team Duties

Assistant coach of West Indies Men’s cricket team Floyd Reifer also suffered a facial injury during training on Wednesday and underwent a similar surgical procedure. Despite the injury, Reifer will continue his coaching duties under the supervision of the medical staff.

Under the leadership of Shai Hope, the West Indies, a two-time World Cup-winning team, has begun their World Cup qualifying campaign strongly with two victories, positioning themselves well for the Super Sixes stage. In their first match, they successfully defended a total of 297 against the USA. Subsequently, against Nepal, centuries from Hope and Nicholas Pooran paved the way for a convincing 101-run victory.

Their upcoming match against Zimbabwe is anticipated to be their toughest challenge thus far in the tournament. Following that, they will face the Netherlands in their final group stage game on Monday.
