KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer To Miss Asia Cup 2023; Doubts Over World Cup Participation

The cricketing world is eagerly awaiting the announcement of India's squad for Asia Cup 2023. However, the latest reports suggest that KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are unlikely to be part of the tournament that will run from August 30 to September 17 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Rahul and Iyer to miss Asia Cup, World Cup comeback in sight

According to a report by Cricbuzz, insiders within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have disclosed that both players have not yet fully recovered from their injuries and, therefore, will not be rushed into the six-team championship.

This decision comes despite both Rahul and Iyer actively sharing encouraging progress updates on social media regarding their fitness levels.

Rahul and Iyer are not just being preserved for the continental tournament but are being eyed for potential inclusion in the World Cup 2023 squad later this year. Their complete recovery is paramount, and the three-ODI series against Australia in September might serve as a critical comeback stage for the duo.

The pair’s absence means that the majority of the players from the ODI series against West Indies will be retained for Asia Cup 2023. However, there will be some bowling changes as Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah are set to make a comeback.

Meanwhile, the vital middle-order pair’s absence from Asia Cup 2023 will bring about a considerable shift in the team's batting line-up. After a wonderful ODI series against West Indies where he won the Player of the Series award, the door is now wide open for Ishan Kishan to not only prove his mettle in the Asia Cup but also stake his claim for World Cup 2023.

Moreover, captain Rohit Sharma's return to the playing XI will also reshuffle the opening order, possibly making way for Shubman Gill's shift to the middle order after Kishan’s heroics.

These changes in team composition and batting order will be carefully examined and refined during the Asia Cup preparatory camp, due to take place in Bengaluru from August 24 to 29. India is set to start its Asia Cup 2023 campaign against Pakistan on September 2.
