The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled India’s 15-player squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024 on April 30, i.e., roughly a month prior to the launch of the tournament. As of now, each of the 15 designated players, coupled with the four travelling reserves, are plying their trades for their respective franchises in IPL 2024.
While the IPL 2024 season is slated to conclude on May 26, the T20 World Cup launch date of June 1 leaves less than a week’s gap for all competing players between the two high-profile T20 competitions.
As several fans and cricket experts continue to amplify the importance of giving some rest to the World Cup-bound players, BCCI secretary Jay Shah recently stated that the ongoing IPL 2024 season is actually a perfect opportunity for Indian cricketers to prepare for the impending global event.
Jay Shah says there is no need to rest players
“Why do you want to rest players? This is (as good as a) practice session, you cannot get any better opportunity (to prepare) than this.”
Jay Shah further stated that rested players will not be able to bowl at ‘cosmopolitan teams’ in IPL, and cited the example of Mumbai Indians quick and India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah getting the opportunity of bowling at Australia’s world-conquering opener Travis Head. He added:
“There is a cosmopolitan team in front of you, one team has a bowler from New Zealand, the other has a bowler from Australia and the next one has a bowler from Sri Lanka. If we rest a bowler, he won't get a chance to bowl at Travis Head. When (Jasprit) Bumrah will bowl to Travis Head, he will understand where to bowl to him and how. There is no better opportunity.”
The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, will be expected to travel to USA later this month for the T20 World Cup 2024. They will be facing Ireland in their opening match of the tournament at New York on June 5.
