Virat Kohli notched up his sixth 50-plus score of the IPL 2024 season by smearing 92 runs from just 47 balls against Punjab Kings on May 9. The legendary RCB opener smacked seven boundaries and six sixes in his experimental knock, one which featured a wide range of strokes including his rarely-used slog sweeps.

Kohli’s turbulent batting onslaught helped RCB secure an emphatic 60-run win at Dharamshala, as they continue to keep their playoffs hopes alive. Fittingly declared as ‘Player of the Match’ for his efforts, the cricketer reflected his innings and team’s newfound winning momentum at the fag end of IPL 2024.

Kohli speaks after silencing strike-rate criticisms

While speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Virat Kohli reflected his 92-run knock and his need of pulling out the slog sweeps.

The cricketer said that some of the shots he hit during his match-winning innings helped him maintain a good strike-rate in the middle overs. He said:

“For me, it's quality over quantity works at my age of 36. Practice less and then certain aspects you want to get better. Need to improve on things as we go along. I brought out the slog sweep. I did not practice it at all. I want to keep getting the gaps. Those shots help me maintain good strike rate in the middle overs.”

Virat Kohli also spoke about RCB’s newfound momentum, as they registered their fourth successive win of IPL 2024 through their latest triumph over Punjab Kings. The all-time IPL great claimed that after RCB’s disastrous opening half of the season, the entire team regrouped before attaining positive momentum at the Eden Gardens on April 21. He added:

“Honestly, the only way to go through the tournament is being honest with ourselves. We were awful in the first half and then had a chat amongst ourselves. It started in Kolkata and now it's going on from there. We bowled really well in the Kolkata game.”

Kohli also signified the need of making RCB fans proud, and admitted that his team has gotten into a position where they have to rely on exterior results as well.

“We want to make our fans proud and raise our levels. We are on a roll now but we have to depend on other factors as well. That's the sad thing. We do not want to depend on other results but that's the way it is.”

RCB’s latest win helped them maintain their number seventh spot on the IPL 2024 points table. In a bid to qualify for the playoffs, they also need to win each of their remaining two fixtures.

Virat Kohli and the rest of his RCB colleagues will now face Delhi Capitals in match number 62 of the IPL 2024 season. The much-awaited contest will be staged at Bengaluru on May 12.
