England Test skipper, Ben Stoke is set to gently ease back into bowling during Thursday's training session ahead of the second Test against India in Vizag. However, his return is shadowed by a shift in the ICC’s Test all-rounder rankings, where his teammate, Joe Root has now overtaken him. Root's recent five wickets in the series opener in Hyderabad have propelled him to the 4th position, one spot ahead of Stokes.

Ben Stokes reveals whether he'll bowl in Vizag Test

Stokes, who has been one of England's most formidable all-rounders, has not bowled in a since the Lord’s Ashes Test in June last year. He underwent knee surgery in November and only recently made his comeback, demonstrating his batting brilliance in the first Test with an impressive innings of 70 and effecting a remarkable run-out that of Ravindra Jadeja.

As reported by The Telegraph, Stokes stated that his knee has remained completely unaffected as he expressed contentment with its current state.

“There has been no reaction from my knee, nothing like that whatsoever. I am happy where it is at. There are no issues whatsoever," said Stokes.

Stokes also shared his intention to start bowling again, mentioning that he plans to begin bowling on Thursday. He explained that the purpose of his current tour is to gradually reintegrate bowling into his routine, noting that his extensive running exercises were part of this preparation.

“You will see me bowl tomorrow. I did say that this trip is a back to bowling programme for me. You have seen me do a lot of running and that has been part of it. Tomorrow is just the start of low impact bowling, get the rest of my body going again and just gradually keep building that up," added the 32-year-old.

However, Stokes further stated that he would not participate as a bowler in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, acknowledging that not bowling simplifies things. However, he expressed his anticipation for returning to bowling, acknowledging that he has felt the absence of this aspect of his game and is cognizant of the significant advantage his bowling brings to the team.

The seasoned player admitted that preparing solely as a batsman is less demanding but mentioned that his involvement in bowling would be minimal to prevent any injuries before the game.

“I won’t be bowling in the game [the second Test in Visakhapatnam]. It is a lot easier [not bowling]. But I am looking forward to getting back into it. I have obviously missed it and I know when I am bowling it is a huge help for the team. Preparing just as a batter is a lot easier, you don’t have to do as much. It will be very very minimal because I don’t want to do myself any damage the day before the game," concluded Stokes.

Meanwhile, having bowled in only two of his last seven Tests since last summer and participating in the ICC World Cup 2023 primarily as a batsman, Stokes looks eager to resume his role as a bowler. His return to bowling will only add depth to the already solid-looking English bowling line-up.
