New Zealand fought back to claim victory in the second ODI by 50 runs to level the series 1-1 on Saturday (August 20) in Barbados.
Forced into bat, Martin Guptill (3) departed early, and soon after, Devon Conway (6) and stand-in skipper Tom Latham (0) followed his way to the pavilion at the score of 31 inside the first powerplay. Finn Allen, who opened the innings, was soon joined by Daryl Mitchell (41), with the duo forming a solid 84-run stand for the fourth wicket to take their side to 115.
Soon after they lost Daryl, Allen stood there holding his side by scoring a valiant 96 off 177 deliveries, four short of the landmark, which included three sixes and seven fours before getting knocked over by Jason Holder. None of the three from Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips and James Neesham could even get to ten as Kiwis were reduced to 167/8 with the 42nd over still on.
Mitchell Santner (26) and Trent Boult (16) did give some relief to the visitors by scoring some crucial runs to somehow take them to 212 all out. Kevin Sinclair bowled superbly, accounting for four wickets, along with Holder, who got three giving Blackcaps a hard time.
Southee, Boult duo too good for Windies
Chasing 213 for a series win, the Men in Maroon lost Kyle Mayers (0) in the first over, and the rest were extremely quick to follow him back in the hut. Not just two or three, but the Caribbean side were six down for 27 runs within the powerplay, and credit thoroughly goes to fiery Trent Boult and Tim Southee, who struck one after the other, including the wicket of skipper Nicholas Pooran (2) to wreak havoc on the batters.
It just went bad to worse when Keacy Carty (16) was run-out, thanks to an outstanding piece of fielding from Guptill. Seven down, the home side were looking clueless and then, all of a sudden, the rain gods came heavily, causing interruption to an already disrupted game for the Windies.
The match started with overs reduced to 41, but the DLS target was not even one short of the original mark of 212. Some quality fight from Yannic Cariah (52) and Alzarri Joseph (49) propelled the hosts past 150 but wasn't enough. The Windies were eventually bowled out for 161, finding themselves 50 short of the target.
With this win, the Kiwis levelled the series and will face their counterparts on the 21st of August, Sunday.
