ICC’s decision of allotting a two-and-a-half-month window for the Indian Premier League in the Future Tours and Programmes Cycle from 2023-27 has met with mixed responses. Owing to the inclusion of two new franchises in the lucrative T20 tournament, ICC had to extend 15 days in the existing window.

Though there was some criticism, many in the cricket fraternity welcomed the move with open arms. Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris firmly backed the idea of the expansion of IPL in the FTP cycle.

The all-rounder recalls his prediction regarding IPL from ten years ago

The veteran mentioned that he had predicted the extended window some ten years ago. Styris also hailed the decision, saying that there can be nothing better than the cricketers from all over the world playing together without the pressure of national duties.

"I remember 10 years ago the conversation was all around how it was going to creep four or five days each year and it will get to a three-month season. Well, we are starting to get there now. It is just taking a little longer than we expected, and I think you are right.

"I think it will become the focal point that will allow all the players from all over the world to come together and play without any issues from a nationality perspective. I was in favor of it 10 years ago and I'm in favor of it now," the New Zealand veteran said on the Sports 18 show, Sports Over The Top.

Styris describes the importance of One Day format

Further in the interaction, Styris also elaborated his opinion on the future of One Day cricket. An intense debate is going on in the cricket fraternity regarding the relevance of the 50-over format. Players like Moeen Ali, Usman Khawaja, Wasim Akram, and Ravi Shastri have openly shown their displeasure with the format.

They have predicted the death of One Day Internationals due to the growing popularity of franchise cricket. However, Styris, who has featured in a whopping 188 ODI matches, does not agree with the narrative.

The 47-year-old backed the 50-over format saying that it requires balance from the players. The NZ all-rounder believes that to excel in ODIs, a player needs both technique and power.

"I really enjoyed one-day cricket. Power, speed, stamina, agility, and strength are all of those things that kick in as well as the traditional cricket where there is the rotation of the strike. So, I would love to see it continue,” Styris concluded.
