Countries like England, Australia, the USA and France enjoy the tag of being called a 'sporting nation'. However, India has often been associated with just a cricketing nation.

It is not wrong to say that cricket is regarded as an emotion in India, while other sports get sidelined. Thus, it is very safe for anyone to conclude cricket is India's national sport.

However, that is not the case as cricket is not India's national sport. Much to many's surprise, neither hockey nor kabaddi is our country's national sport. It leads to a common question in everyone's mind why hasn't the government declared cricket, which is the most followed, played, watched and loved sport in our country as the national sport?

Here Is Why Cricket Is Not India's National Sport

In 2020, government replied to an RTI filed by a teacher from Dhule district from the state of Maharashtra , seeking to know when hockey was declared as India’s national game.

"The government has not declared any sport/game as the national game of the country, as the objective of the government is to encourage/promote all popular sports disciplines," the ministry of youth affairs and sports replied.

Recently, Indian hockey team won the bronze medal in Paris Olympics 2024 and several cricketers reacted to the historic feat.
