Why Are Kane Williamson And Other Star Players Missing From NZ Squad For Pakistan T20Is?

New Zealand are sending a second-string squad for T20I series vs Pakistan New Zealand are sending a second-string squad for T20I series vs Pakistan

In a surprising turn of events, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Pakistan, noticeably devoid of several key players, including the likes of Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Daryl Mitchell among others.

The NZ squad for PAK series, set to begin on April 18 in Rawalpindi, has introduced a slew of fresh faces, reflecting the choices NZC has made in the face of concurrent cricketing commitments.

New Zealand Cricket has prioritized IPL over T20I series vs PAK

The absence of Kane Williamson along with eight other first-choice players from the squad has sparked curiosity among fans. The reason behind this significant decision lies in the clash with the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, known for its high competitive standards.

NZC has opted to prioritize participation in the IPL for its top players, considering it superior match practice than playing against Pakistan ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup scheduled for June.

Surprisingly, Michael Bracewell has been named captain for the series against Pakistan. This will mark Bracewell's leadership debut in international cricket, especially notable as he has not played at this level since March of the previous year.

His selection comes after a period of recovery from significant injuries, including a ruptured Achilles and a broken finger.

The absence of cricketing stalwarts like Trent Boult, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, and Williamson is because of their commitments in the IPL.

This situation presents an opportunity for emerging talents and seasoned players outside of the usual New Zealand lineup to shine on the international stage. The likes of Finn Allen, Jimmy Neesham, and Ish Sodhi are expected to lead the young squad with their experience and skill.

The series, comprising matches in Rawalpindi and Lahore, offers both New Zealand and Pakistan a platform to fine-tune their teams ahead of the World Cup.
