Team England will be desperate to defend their title when they take the field in the upcoming ODI World Cup in India. In the previous edition in 2019, England had a great bunch of players, including Joe Root, Jofra Archer, and Jos Buttler, alongside the man of the final, Benjamin Andrew Stokes.

Stokes played a blinder and helped England clinch the title by winning the memorable cliffhanger. It was a relief for the other teams that he retired from ODIs until the news came that he was back and would be playing the World Cup in India.

Despite having a bloke like Stokes in the team, Joe Root, one of the best batters in the world, has predicted Jonny Bairstow to emerge as the leading run-scorer in the World Cup 2023.

Why Can Jonny Bairstow have a terrific World Cup?

We all are familiar with what Bairstow can do when he is in touch. In 96 ODI innings, Bairstow has scored over 3600 runs at a stunning average of 46. In the six ODIs that he has played in India, he has scored 120 runs at an impressive average of 40.

Undoubtedly, the swashbuckling opener is one of the best batters in the World. Also, in the recently concluded T20I series against New Zealand, he smashed 175 runs in just four games at an average of over 58. It seems that he is back in his beast form heading to the World Cup in India.

Also, his ability to play spin will make him stand out from the others. If he gets going, he will be the most destructive batter in the showpiece event. With the ODI series against New Zealand about to start, Bairstow would look to capitalise on this opportunity and find his rhythm.

So, it will be interesting to see if Root's prediction comes true or the bowlers have an upper hand over the English maestro.
