It is a historic day for Pakistan cricket, as PCB, on Sunday, September 15, announced that 52-year-old Saleema Imtiaz has become the first Pakistani woman umpire to join the ICC International Panel of Development umpires. Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed the news on their social media platforms, revealing that Imtiaz would now be eligible to officiate in ICC women's events and bilateral matches.
What Is Saleema Imtiaz's Background?
It is worth noting that Saleema is a renowned name in Pakistan and one of the top officials there. She started her umpiring career in 2008, and for the past three years, she has mostly officiated in Asian Cricket Council (ACC) games. She was last seen officiating in the 2022 and 2024 ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cups and the 2023 ACC Emerging Women’s Cup in Hong Kong.
Further, Imtiaz’s daughter, Kainat Imtiaz, is an international cricketer and has played 40 games for Pakistan, including 19 one-day internationals and 21 T20Is.
Imtiaz said she had always wanted to make her own name in umpiring since her daughter made her international debut against South Africa in 2010.
Saleema Reflects on Being Nominated for ICC Panel
“This isn’t just a win for me, it’s a win for every aspiring female cricketer and umpire in Pakistan. I hope my success motivates countless women who dream of making their mark in the sport. This moment reflects the growing influence of women in cricket and the PCB’s commitment to fostering that development,” said Saleema.
“My own dream was to represent my country at an international level. I’ve had opportunities with the Asian Cricket Council, but officiating at the highest level has always been the ultimate goal.”
Imtiaz’s first on-field appointment in a bilateral series will see her officiate the three-match T20 series between Pakistan women and South Africa women, which begins at Multan on Monday.
