The recognition came in the wake of a crucial match against the West Indies at Harare Sports Club on June 24, 2023.

Despite a disappointing campaign that left the Windies on the verge of missing out on the ODI World Cup 2023 qualification, Zimbabwe's cricketers showcased true spirit. The Zimbabwe team's victory by 35 runs over the West Indies was not just about the numbers; it was marked by a touching display of compassion.

The heartwarming scene unfolded as Zimbabwe's Tadiwanashe Marumani, Sikandar Raza, and Sean Williams consoled a dejected Akeal Hosein from the West Indies. The gesture, captured in a video shared on social media, resonated with cricket fans worldwide. The Zimbabwe Cricket Board expressed their gratitude, stating, 

"The ICC has announced Zimbabwe as the winner of the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award 2023. We are humbled."


The West Indies' challenging journey in the World Cup Qualifiers saw them finish fifth on the table, securing just one win. In contrast, Zimbabwe claimed the third spot but narrowly missed ODI World Cup qualification due to a lower Net Run Rate.

During the Harare clash, Zimbabwe, batting first, faced a rollercoaster as Joylord Gumbie and Craig Ervine set a solid foundation, only to face a middle-order collapse. Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl's partnership steadied the ship, helping them post 268. The Windies, in pursuit of 269, faced setbacks despite Kyle Mayers' half-century.
