In a recent development, Shreyas Iyer was admitted to the ICU in Sydney after sustaining internal bleeding from a rib-cage injury. The injury occurred during the third and final ODI against Australia, when Iyer took a brilliant catch off Harshit Rana while running backwards from backward point to dismiss Alex Carey.

He landed awkwardly on his left side, affecting his ribs and elbows, and had to leave the field immediately for medical attention.

BCCI steps in to arrange family support

According to report by the Times of India, Shreyas Iyer’s parents have applied for urgent visas to join him in Sydney. The BCCI is completing the formalities to ensure that at least one family member can be with him as soon as possible.

"Arrangements are being made by the BCCI. As of now, it is not clear whether both parents will go, but someone will be with him at the earliest in the hospital."

Medical team monitoring Iyer's progress

It is also important to mention that the BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in both Sydney and India, is closely monitoring Shreyas Iyer’s condition and injury severity. In a recent statement, the board shared that the Indian team doctor will remain with him in Sydney to take a close look at his day-to-day recovery.

It would not be wrong to say that Iyer's injury can be a massive blow for India in the upcoming ODI series. Taking a look at his overall performance this year, the star batter has scored 496 runs in 10 innings at an average of 49.60 and a strike-rate of 89.53.

With the injury considered as serious it is likely expected that he might not recover it time and could likely miss the ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30. For now, Iyer is expected to be out for about three weeks.
