As the Mumbai Indians (MI) prepare to host the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 45 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, the evening will hold more than just cricketing action.

Sunday’s clash marks the return of the franchise’s special tradition-Education and Sports for All (ESA) Day. This initiative highlights MI’s ongoing commitment to empowering underprivileged children through education and sports.

What Is ESA Day?

ESA Day is a collaboration between MI and the Reliance Foundation. It is a heartwarming annual event that invites thousands of children from various NGOs to witness a live IPL match. This year, the Wankhede will open its gates to around 19,000 children, including 200 children with special needs, offering them an unforgettable experience of cheering for their heroes in blue.

What Is The Aim Of ESA Day?

Started in 2023 as a dedicated matchday, ESA Day is rooted in a cause MI has participated since 2010. Over the years, the initiative has aimed to nurture talent, build confidence, and provide exposure to young individuals through the medium of sport and education.

Before MI take on LSG, Mrs Nita Ambani had a message for the MI players.

“People who have been with MI know our next game is very special, we have underprivileged children coming, and the energy is really special. So please, put up your best show for them." Mrs Ambani said as quoted on the MI website.

ESA Day is one among several themed matchdays in the IPL, with other franchises like Royal Challengers Bengaluru hosting a “Go Green Day” and Rajasthan Royals celebrating an “PinkPromise Match". However, MI’s ESA Day stands out for its community impact and legacy, bringing the spirit of cricket closer to those who need it most.

MI & LSG's Tournament So Far

The MI have shown resilience and have made a strong comeback, winning four consecutive matches after a challenging start. With five wins and 10 points, they currently sit fifth on the points table.

On the other side, LSG, also with five wins and 10 points, but are slightly behind due to a negative net run rate. Their performance has been a mix of highs and lows, but they remain in the playoff race.

Both teams have the potential to secure a playoff spot, but consistency in their upcoming matches will be crucial.
