The tension between India and Pakistan off the field just found a new pitch to play on and this time, it involves two of cricket's biggest names, Shahid Afridi and Shikhar Dhawan. What started as a shocking remark by Afridi on the recent Pahalgam terror attack has transformed into a full-blown war of words neither side seems ready to end.
Shahid Afridi Insults Indian Army; Accuses India Of Staging Pahalgam Attack
Following the ghastly terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi threw fuel on an already blazing fire. In a now-viral video, Afridi made some absolutely wild claims about India and the Indian Army.
"The terrorists continued to kill people in Pahalgam for an hour, and not a single Indian soldier out of 8 lakh showed up. But when they did, they blamed Pakistan," Afridi said while addressing reporters in Pakistan.
That wasn't all. Afridi went on to accuse India of staging the entire attack, saying:
"India carries out terrorism itself, kills its own people, and then puts the blame on Pakistan."
Safe to say, that didn’t sit well with a lot of Indians.
Shikhar Dhawan Hits Back Citing Kargil and Indian Army Pride
Enter Shikhar Dhawan. The former India opener didn’t hold back. Taking to X, he slammed Afridi with a post that quickly caught fire:
"Kargil mein bhi haraya tha, already itna gire hue ho aur kitna giroge, bewajah comments pass karne se acha hai apne desh ki taraqqi mai dimag lagao @SAfridiOfficial. Humein hamari Indian Army par bohot garv hai. Bharat Mata Ki Jai! Jai Hind!"
Dhawan reminded Afridi of Pakistan’s 1999 Kargil War defeat and basically asked him to zip it and focus on fixing things in his own backyard.
Afridi’s ‘Chae’ Jibe Adds Fuel to the Fire
But Afridi wasn't done. Replying with another jibe and this time with a heavy dose of sarcasm, he posted a photo holding a cup of tea and wrote:
"Chouro jeet haar ko, aao tumhey chae pilata hun Shikhar."
Now, that "chae" reference isn’t just a casual dig. It's a direct callback to the 2019 incident when Indian Air Force pilot Abhinandan Varthaman was captured by Pakistan. Back then, a video of Abhinandan sipping tea in captivity had gone viral.
Unsurprisingly, fans on both sides of the border have been jumping into the fray. While Indians lauded Dhawan for standing up for the Indian Army, Afridi's comments drew widespread criticism for being insensitive and inflammatory.
