Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein is set to join the West Indies squad for the ongoing ODI series against Bangladesh. Hosein, who will arrive on Monday, will be available for the remaining matches as the tourists look to bounce back from a 74-run defeat in the opening game.

Akeal's addition comes as both teams adjust their squads in response to the slow, turning pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, where spinners dominated the first ODI.

West Indies bolster spin attack with Akeal

"Akeal is expected to arrive tonight to join the ODI team," a BCB official confirmed to Cricbuzz on Monday. Notably, in the first game, West Indies left-arm spinner Khary Pierre was economical, returning figures of 1 for 19 from his 10 overs, while off-spinner Roston Chase claimed two wickets.

The hosts, Bangladesh, have also reinforced their spin department, adding left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed to their squad for the series.

Dhaka pitch is the reason behind spin reinforcement

The 1st ODI saw a truly baffling image of a black Dhaka pitch that intimidated both sides, especially West Indies. With the 2nd ODI on the same venue, the Shai Hope-led side is now bolstering their spin arsenal with Akeal.

Akeal Hosein, a left-arm finger-spinner, is thrifty and a valuable asset for the team, especially in the powerplay where West Indies lacks specialised spin attack. Besides Khary Pierre and Gudakesh Motie, Akeal will be a good choice for a pitch that hardly supported seamers in the opening encounter.

Other squad changes announced

The West Indies have also made other changes to their bowling lineup. Left-arm pacer Ramon Simmonds, 24, has received his maiden ODI call-up after previously playing two T20 Internationals. Meanwhile, fast bowlers Jediah Blades and Shamar Joseph will return to the Caribbean.
