Amidst the electric atmosphere of the India-Pakistan Super Fours clash at Asia Cup 2023 in Colombo's R Premadasa Stadium, it wasn't a boundary or a wicket that grabbed headlines, but a heartening display of sportsmanship off the field.

Afridi surprised Bumrah with a special gift for his newborn

While the rain might have dampened the spirits of fans, Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi illuminated the scene with a kind-hearted gesture towards his Indian counterpart, Jasprit Bumrah, who recently became a father.

Only days before the face-off, Bumrah celebrated the birth of his baby boy. He and his wife, cricket presenter Sanjana Ganesan, became proud parents on September 4. In light of this personal joy, Bumrah temporarily stepped away from the limelight, making a brief trip back to India during the group stages. Yet, his commitment to the game saw him return promptly for the marquee clash against Pakistan.

After the match was postponed to the reserve day, a video posted by Pakistan Cricket that's now viral showed Afridi approaching Bumrah with a present in hand as he congratulated the Indian seamer on entering fatherhood.

"Brother, mighty congratulations on the new prince. May God bless him, and may he become the new Bumrah. Good luck," Afridi was heard saying.

A visibly touched Bumrah kept expressing his gratitude and appreciated the ‘sweet gesture’ which further highlighted the mutual respect and camaraderie shared by players off the field.

As for the match, Pakistan captain, Babar Azam, after winning the toss, opted to field first, hoping to capitalize on any early assistance the pitch might offer. This strategy, however, was neutralized by the Indian openers.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill put on a show, laying a robust foundation for the Indian team. After establishing a century partnership, both fell prey to Shadab Khan and Afridi in succession.

The game's momentum, however, was interrupted by rain with India's scoreboard showing 147/2 in 24.1 overs. An unyielding wet outfield led to the match being deferred to the reserved day.
