Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has taken a swipe at the broadcasters of the ODI World Cup 2023, criticising their excessive focus on Virat Kohli ahead of the highly anticipated India vs New Zealand semifinal clash. Despite Kohli's stellar performance in the tournament, Gambhir voiced his concern about the neglect of other players, emphasising that a team effort should be highlighted.

India has had a phenomenal run in the World Cup, remaining undefeated in the round-robin format and securing their place in the semifinals. Kohli, the tournament's highest run-scorer with 594 runs and the achiever of his 49th century, equaling Sachin Tendulkar's record, has been a standout performer.

Gambhir criticised the disproportionate focus on individual players, stressing that it perpetuates the underrated status of certain cricketers.

“You made 50 runs, I made 50 runs. If you show me the whole day, then the whole public will think that I am the star. What will be said? That you are a very underrated player. Who makes underrated? Only underrated broadcasters make it. Only social media makes it. Only experts make it. If I talk about me all day and if I don’t talk about your performance, then you will automatically become underrated. You also work as hard as I have worked.

If your performance is not given credit, then you will always remain underrated. And this is the biggest truth. We have not won the ICC tournament for so long because we are so obsessed with individuals.”

India's historic undefeated run sets them as table-toppers, and they are set to face New Zealand, in the semifinal at Wankhede Stadium on November 15.
