Virat Kohli scored a sensational 51st ODI century as India thrashed Pakistan in a one-sided contest to seal their place in the Champions Trophy semi-finals. However, what if we tell you that Kohli could have been dismissed in his 40s, if Pakistan would have used their presence of mind.

In a rare moment where Kohli lost his concentration he obstructed the field, but the opposition team didn't appeal and as a result, Kohli escaped easily. Pakistan needed to dismiss Kohli early, and they had their chance thanks to the Indian maestro himself, but they failed to capitalise on it.

What did Virat Kohli do?

In the 21st over delivered by Haris Rauf, India's number 3 pushed a ball towards the off side and took a quick single. The ball was thrown towards the non strikers end, but Kohli was safe inside the crease. However, he tried to stop the ball by using his hands.

As per the ICC rules, if Pakistan would have appealed, Kohli would have been dismissed, obstructing the field. At that point of time, he was batting at 41 and his wicket could have changed the outcome of the contest.

What is obstructing the field rule?

As per Law 37 of the MCC rule book, a batter is given out if he wishfully distract the fielding side by his actions.

  • A player could be given out if he deliberately blocks the ball with his hands and is not trying to protect himself from injury. If a batter gets dismissed under this rule, the bowler does not get credit for it.
  • A batter is out if they prevent a fielder from taking a catch, except in cases where a no-ball is called.
  • If a batter intentionally blocks a throw or distracts fielders while the ball is in play, they can be ruled out.
