Rehan Ahmed to replace injured Carse? [Source: AP Photo]
Ahead of their must-win Champions Trophy match Vs Afghanistan, England suffered a jolt as their star pacer Brydon Carse was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury and the board quickly announced mystery spinner, Rehan Ahmed as his replacement in the squad.
Apart from this key injury, England's Champions Trophy campaign has also been hampered due to their loss against Australia in the previous game. England had the game in the palm of their hands, but a Josh Inglis special led the match slip away as the Aussies chased down a record total to secure the win.
The Three Lions will need to beat the Afghan side to stay alive in the tournament and here's their probable XI for the must-win clash.
Will England bring in Rehan Ahmed in place of Carse?
Rehan Ahmed ODI stats
Criterion | Data |
---|---|
Matches | 6 |
Wickets | 10 |
Average | 23.30 |
Strike-rate | 28.2 |
As the stats suggest, Rehan has only played 6 matches, but has scalped 10 wickets at an impressive average of 23.30.
The Afghan top 6 comprises of only 1 left-handed batters and 5 of them are right-handers, meaning Rehan will have advantage against the righty's. Plus, he has prior experience of playing in Pakistan during the Test series and will be a good replacement for Brydon Carse, however, England might have something up their sleeves.
Why England could also be tempted to bring in Jamie Overton?
Jamie Overton replacing Brydon Carse will be a like-to-like replacement by England. Just like Carse, Overton can also chip in with some runs which could come in handy.
Plus, Afghanistan middle-order batters have a weakness against quality pace bowling and they relish playing spinners. As a result, despite Rehan being a quality spinner, Jos Buttler could be tempted to bring in overton to trouble the Afghan batters with pace and bounce.
The rest of the team should remain the same as England are unlikely to make too many chopping and changing after loss Vs Australia.
