Virat Kohli enforced a thunderous World Cup 2023 ton for himself with his late surge against Bangladesh. The cricketer was batting at 73*, still 27 runs away from an unlikely century when Team India required just 28 to secure an easy win in Pune.

Thereafter, Kohli launched an aggressive all-out assault with boundaries and sixes as he raced to his century with a match-winning hit over deep mid-wicket.

Apart from sealing crucial World Cup 2023 points for Team India and a ‘Player of the Match’ memorabilia for himself, the modern-day legend also soared past all-time great Sachin Tendulkar for a number of rare batting records.

Virat Kohli dethrones Tendulkar for these records

Virat Kohli, the relentless maestro of the cricketing world, seems to be consistently reshaping the record books with each appearance for Team India. Just over a month ago in Sri Lanka, the batting veteran became the fastest cricketer to complete 13,000 ODI runs, going past previous record-holder Sachin Tendulkar.

As it turned out, Kohli usurped Tendulkar for a few more records through his recent run-chase special against Bangladesh at the 2023 World Cup.

For starters, the modern-day icon blasted his 78th international ton in Pune, and his overall century tally now features 54 triple-figure scores in winning causes. Having inched closer to Ricky Ponting’s collection of 55 winning hundreds, Kohli leapfrogged Sachin Tendulkar’s match-winning ton count of 53 match-winning centuries.

Virat Kohli also bagged his 11th ‘Player of the Match’ award for Team India across all ICC events. His latest memorabilia once again took him past Tendulkar (10) to become India’s greatest match-winner at the grandest stages. Rohit Sharma and former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, with nine such awards each, are jointly placed at third on the celebrated list.

The legendary batsman also soared past former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene to jump to number four in terms of highest run-aggregators across all formats. Kohli, having taken field against Bangladesh in Pune with 25,923 runs to his name, also became the fastest in history to cross 26,000 international runs.

He achieved the same in his 567th innings, thus doing so in 33 appearances quicker than Sachin Tendulkar.

As has been his norm these days, one can expect Virat Kohli to shatter a few more batting records in the coming days, as Team India braces itself for 2023 World Cup glory at home. Enlightened by his and captain Rohit Sharma’s presence, the ‘Men in Blue’ will face New Zealand for their subsequent challenge on October 22 in Dharamsala.
