India's two cricketing sensations, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are going through a torrid time. Their form and performance in India's last two Test assignments have been criticised by several former players. While some suggested that they should opt for retirement, the others suggested that they must re-gain their form by playing in domestic tournaments.
Gambhir And BCCI's Domestic Demand
Ex-India player and current head-coach, Gautam Gambhir while addressing the last press conference in Australia, also talked about the importance of domestic cricket and urged all senior players, including the duo, to play domestic games and show their "commitment" towards red-ball cricket. In fact, earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also laid emphasis on playing domestic cricket and that players no matter there seniority should opt to return their roots.
Recently, Rohit Sharma's childhood coach, Dinesh Lad also advised that Rohit should prioritise playing domestic cricket over Test cricket after the horrific turn of events in Australia. Rohit, who failed to get going in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, stood out from the final game of the series owing to bad form.
Rohit-Virat's Poor Form
The talented batter managed to score only 31 runs from five games with a worrying average of 6.20. On the other hand, while Virat Kohli did slam a century in the Perth Test match, he too flopped terribly in the games thereafter after he struggled to overcome his similar dismissals debacle.
However, the question now arises that should Kohli and Rohit opt to play a domestic match, which game would they play? The on-going Vijay Hazare Trophy concludes in almost a week, hence, it is obvious that they won't be a part of it. Moreover, looking at the calendar year, India slated to play with England, then depart for the all-important Champions Trophy. After which, the highly-awaited Indian Premier League begins from 14 March.
Which Domestic Tournament Will Rohit-Virat Play In?
But, the two star batters can be seen in the upcoming Ranji Trophy match beginning from 23 January. Since, it will be a four-day affair, they can play at least one match before departing for the ODIs against England starting from 6th February, Thursday.
