Former Indian cricketer and domestic stalwart Wasim Jaffer has joined the Vidarbha Cricket Association as a batting consultant for the domestic season 2025-26. Previously the head coach of Punjab, Jaffer has now joined Vidarbha as the consultant for all age group categories.

Defending Champions Vidarbha Rope In Jaffer

The Ranji Trophy champions Vidarbha have boosted their support staff with the signing of former domestic stalwart and Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer, who is known to be quite influential in domestic cricket, while having staggering numbers in red-ball cricket, especially.

The fact that Jaffer played for Vidarbha in the fag end of his career, where he helped them lift the back-to-back Ranji Trophy titles and Irani Cup in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019, turned out to be a solid partnership between them, as both sides benefited from this venture. Previously, Jaffer's relationship with Chandrakant Pandit, who was previously Vidarbha's head coach, turned out to be exceedingly well for both Vidarbha and Jaffer.

Not just Jaffer; Vidarbha has also signed former Mumbai pacer, Vishal Mahadik, as the under-19 team's head coach, as he made his Ranji debut versus Baroda under the leadership of Sachin Tendulkar in the 1993-1994 season.

Jaffer's Successful Record In The Ranji Trophy

Before this stint, Jaffer had previously been the head coach of Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Orissa, respectively. The 46-year-old has been with the IPL (Indian Premier League) side Punjab Kings from 2019 to 2021 as the batting coach, while he then went on to join Bangladesh under-19 and their high-performance side A team as the batting consultant.

Jaffer has had a very successful first-class career, where he played in 260 red-ball first-class matches and scored 19,410 runs at an average of 50.67 with 57 centuries and 91 half-centuries to his name, while having a best score of 314 not out. For India alone, Jaffer went on to play 31 Test matches and scored 1,944 runs at an average of 34.10, where he scored 11 half-centuries and five centuries in red-ball cricket.

Especially in the Ranji Trophy, Jaffer is the highest run-scorer in the history of the legendary tournament, where he has scored 12,038 runs in 238 matches. About his captaincy career, Jaffer was the captain of Mumbai when they lifted the Ranji Trophy titles in 2008-09 and 2009-10.
