In what seems to be latest developments ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, the United States of America (USA) have appointed the former Sri Lanka pacer Dhammika Prasad as their pace-bowling coach and assistant coach.

Dhammika Prasad represented his national side in 25 Tests, 24 ODIs, and a T20I in his international career. He scalped 75 Test wickets and 32 ODI wickets till he made his last international appearance in the Colombo Test against West Indies in 2015.

He was known for new-ball bowling and played a crucial role in a couple of series wins for Sri Lanka. He was one of the vital cogs in the wheel for Sri Lanka in their historic Test series against England in England in 2014.

Prasad announced his international retirement in 2021 before moving forward to the coaching roles for the different international teams.

USA to undergo tough itinerary in T20 World Cup 2026

Notably, India and Sri Lanka will co-host the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup from February 7, 2026 to March 8, 2026. USA qualified for the tournament with the super-eight appearance in the previous home edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024.

They also scripted history in the previous edition by defeating Pakistan in a thrilling super-over contest, which further led to their qualification in the upcoming edition.

USA are placed in tough Group A, where they will be joined by the holders India, Pakistan, Namibia, and the Netherlands. Their journey in the tournament will start with their campaign opener against the hosts, India on the tournament’s opening day.

Furthermore, they will take on Pakistan in their second match on February 10 to haunt them with the memories of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA. This clash will be followed by USA’s game against Netherlands in the tournament’s 21st fixture before taking Namibia in the 26th game.

Interestingly, it will be the second edition of the T20 World Cup, which will feature 20 teams in the tournament. Last time, the 2024 edition happened to be the first edition to have 20 teams divided in four groups of five teams each.

Suspension of USA's ICC membership status and aftermath

Apart from this, the USA cricket team has also been in the news for some other reasons beyond cricket. In September 2025, ICC left everyone shocked by suspending the ICC Membership status of USA cricket ‘with immediate effect’.

“The International Cricket Council (ICC), after a thorough review of affairs and extensive engagement with key stakeholders over the past year, today confirmed the suspension of ICC membership status of USA Cricket, with immediate effect,” read a report by ICC after this decision.

“The suspension is an unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long-term interests of the game and the ICC’s top priority remains ensuring that the athletes and the sport itself are not impacted due to the suspension. The ICC Board has decided that USA’s national teams will retain their right to participate in ICC events, including preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28),” it added further as the apex governing body decided to keep USA eligible for the multi-team events.
