Young Indian spinner Saumy Pandey packed six Afghanistan wickets, including four in the space of a single spell in match number one of the ongoing Under-19 tri-series in South Africa. Remarkably, the cricketer also claimed a hat-trick in the contest to headline India’s remarkable six-wicket win at Johannesburg.

The tri-series marks the final round of dress rehearsal for the Indian team prior to the much-awaited Under-19 World Cup, also set to be played in South Africa from January 2024 onwards.

Saumy Pandey launches India’s World Cup prep in style

Saumy Pandey waltzed through Afghanistan’s Under-19 batting line-up at the Old Edwardians Cricket Club A Ground with a sizzling six-wicket haul. The 19-year-old claimed his first three wickets of the innings in the form of a hat-trick by removing Jamshid Zadran, Numan Shah and Rahimullah Zurmati in succession.

The cricketer also accounted for Nasir Hassan the following over to claim four wickets in the space of five balls at one stage of the game. Pandey added two more Afghan victims to his tally in the death overs to finish his 10-over spell with astonishing figures of 6-29. His six-fer restricted Afghanistan to just 198 upfront, and he received much assistance from new-ball pacer Raj Limbani and spin mate Murugan Abhishek.

Later in the game, Indian Under-19 opener Adarsh Singh produced an unbeaten 112 to guide his side to a six-wicket win.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah congratulated the junior Indian team, and acknowledged Saumy Pandey for his match-winning six-wicket haul and Adarsh Singh’s unbeaten ton.

The ‘Boys in Blue’ will now up against hosts South Africa Under-19 in match number three on January 2.

The ongoing tri-series in South Africa will be followed by the much-awaited 2024 Under-19 World Cup, set to commence from January 19 onwards. The Indian team, also the defending champions, is clubbed in Group A alongside Bangladesh, Ireland and USA.
