Aakash Chopra believes rising Australian opener Travis Head could be a match-winner for Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the struggling franchise must go after him during the forthcoming mini-auction.

As the excitement brews around Head's name ahead of the bidding war scheduled for December 19 in Dubai, the former India opener said Head could be a fruitful alternative for PBKS' designated top-order aggressor Jonny Bairstow.

Gauging the interesting around him, Head became one of the prominent Australian players to have registered for the mini-auction coming up at a base prize of INR 2 crores after his excellent run at the ICC World Cup 2023.

The attacking left-hander, who produced a memorable century in the final against India in Ahmedabad, finished the tournament with 329 runs in just six innings at a strike-rate of 127.51 despite missing the initial bouts of the campaign with an injury.

The swashbuckling top-order player is renowned for his blitz and big-match capabilities, having also posted a terrific hundred in Australia's victory against India in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June. Since the turn of 2020, Head has made his Test runs at an average of 46.74 while going at a strike rate above 76.

And even though the cricketer's T20I stocks haven't quite escalated to such heights, no one carries doubt on his impact value at the top of the order against the new ball. If given consistent game time and assurance, Head could prove to be a match-winner for his IPL side.

"You can look towards Azmatullah Omarzai. You can play him in place of Sam Curran. I feel he (Omarzai) will do better than him (Curran). You can keep Travis Head," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

"If you feel you need an option or backup for Jonny Bairstow, why not Travis Head? Lord Thakur is available if you need an Indian bowler and batter."
