Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest news that emerged out of Saturday, December 7.
Travis Head Tons Up In Adelaide As India Stare At Big Defeat
Travis Head unleashed a blazing century against India on Day 2 of the Adelaide Test to extend Australia’s lead to 157 runs. Head made 140 runs from just 141 balls in all before four-wicket hauls from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj enveloped the entire Australian innings for 337.
In the final session of play, Team India lost five of their top six batters, with unbeaten Rishabh Pant (28*) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (15*) guiding the visitors till stumps at 128-5. Pat Cummins and Scott Boland picked up two wickets each in the innings, with the latter claiming the prized scalps of Perth centurions Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli. The second Indian innings will now resume on Day 3 as they find themselves another 29 runs away from the hosts.
Brook, Carse Ensure Day 1 Dominance For England Over NZ
England pacemen Gus Atkinson (4-31) and Brydon Carse (4-46) picked up eight wickets between them to roll up hosts New Zealand for 125 in their first innings. Emboldened with a strong 155-run lead, England employed their standard ‘BazBall’ routine to race to 378-5 in 76 overs by stumps on Day 2. Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell both belted swift 90s before they were denied their respective centuries by senior New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee.
With an overall lead of 533 runs, unbeaten half-centurion Joe Root (73* off 106) will resume the English innings on Day 3 alongside captain Ben Stokes (35* off 26).
South Africa’s Dane Paterson Takes 5 To Deny SL Lead On Day 3
Confident Sri Lanka squandered away their overnight advantage by crashing from 242-3 to 328 all out, thus losing their final seven wickets within the first half of the third afternoon. Overnight batters Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis were both dismissed in the 40s by South African speed demon Marco Jansen. Fellow paceman Dane Paterson, on the other hand, picked up career-best figures of 5-71 as South Africa ended up gaining a handy 20-run lead at the halfway stage of the match.
A splendid half-century from opener Aiden Markram further enhanced the South African lead to 221 runs by stumps on Day 3. Unbeaten Tristan Stubbs (36*) and captain Temba Bavuma (48*) will both resume the second innings for the hosts on Sunday, December 8; all while nearing their respective fifties.
Ireland Women Script Historic Series Win In Bangladesh
Ireland Women blanked hosts Bangladesh by 47 runs at the Sylhet Stadium to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Ireland carted 134-5 from 20 overs courtesy of top-scorers Orla Prendergast (32 off 25) and Laura Delany (35 off 25). Prendergast also excelled with the ball, considering her three-wicket haul restricted Bangladesh to just 87 in 17.1 overs.
The win handed Ireland a rare away T20I series win over a Test-playing nation, marking only the third such instance and only the second in the Asian subcontinent after having defeated Pakistan back in November 2022.
