TNPL 2022 | CSG vs DD | Chepauk Super Gillies edge past Dindigul Dragons in low-scoring thriller

Riding on the openers’ useful knocks and Sonu Yadav’s excellent 26-run cameo, the defending champions Chepauk Super Gillies pipped Dindigul Dragons by five wickets in the 21st match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2022 on Saturday, July 16.

Kaushik Gandhi & N Jagadeesan Help CSG Ace The Run Chase

Considering CSG's red hot form in the tournament, 139 should have been a comfortable chase for them, but that wasn't the case when Kaushik Gandhi's troops came out to hunt down the target.

Chasing 139, the Super Gillies suffered a few hiccups after a flying start provided by Kaushik Gandhi (38-ball 44) and N Jagadeesan (30-ball 31) at the top of the order. The duo forged a 64-run partnership for the opening wicket.

Although Dindigul Dragons struck twice in successive overs to make a quick comeback, it was too late for them as the top order of Super Gillies had already done the damage.

The bits and pieces contribution from the lower order eventually helped CSG go past the finish line in 19.2 overs with five wickets in hand.

Rajendran Vivek's Half-Century helped DD Get A Respectable Total

Earlier, Rajendran Vivek's blistering 38-ball 61 and handy knocks from skipper Ravichandran Ashwin and K Mani Bharathi propelled Dindigul Dragons to 138/5 in the first inning.

On being sent to bat first, the Dragons got off to a disastrous start, losing both their openers – Vishal Vaidhya and Hari Nishaanth, cheaply inside two overs.

Vivek remained unbeaten on 61 off 38 balls as Dindigul posted 138 for five wickets in 20 overs.

Don't think there is a competition with anyone: Mohammad Amir

Left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir believes that it's futile to compare him with any former or current crop of Pakistani bowlers as his skills are unrivalled. Amir was one of the hottest young talents when he burst on the scene back in late 2000s. Blessed with a smooth action and the ability to move the ball both ways at searing pace, the seamer was destined for greatness. However, he fell off the cliff in August 2010 due to his involvement in the infamous spot-fixing scandal, alongside then skipper Salman Butt and pacer Mohammad Asif. Amir was handed a 5-year ban and while he dished out some memorable performances following his return in 2016, he looked a pale shadow of his former self. He responded by saying that there was no competition. "I don't think there is a competition of myself with anyone. I was the only bowler who was in the ICC rankings. Even when I was dropped after the World Cup, I was still in the rankings for a good year and a half," said Amir as quoted by Cricket Pakistan. Amir was eventually dropped from the set-up following his decision to retire from Test cricket in 2019. The pacer then shocked everyone by announcing his abrupt retirement from all formats of the game a year later. 'I am the only one in my class'- Mohammad Amir With Shaheen Afridi spearheading the bowling attack in all formats, Pakistan cricket has moved on from Amir but the 30-year-old still believes that he is a class apart from the rest. "The skills that I have don't compare to anyone along with my mindset. I don't think there are any comparisons because everyone has a different class and I am the only one in my class," he added. Amir represented Pakistan in 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 50 T20Is, claiming 119, 81 and 59 wickets, respectively. His last international outing came in a T20I against England in 2020.
