Making a comeback when you are 35-plus was never going to be easy: Dinesh Karthik

In recent years, Cricket has been more than just a source of entertainment for fans across the globe. The sport has moved spectators with inspirational comebacks and one such instance is the rise of the wicketkeeper batter, Dinesh Karthik.

From being a commentator during the 2021 India tour of England to cementing his place in the middle-order of the Indian side, Karthik's career graph is all about heartbreaking lows and memorable upswings.

It all started from his tenure with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2022 IPL edition, where he was phenomenal with the bat and made 330 runs in 16 matches. Karthik returned to the national team after almost three years on the back of his impressive IPL displays and gave a good account of himself.

Out of the multiple comebacks he has had to pull off over the years, Karthik believes the recent comeback was the most difficult one.

“Making a comeback when you are 35-plus was never going to be easy. I am thankful to everyone who helped me during that phase. I quietly believed in myself and did the hard yards before the IPL, and I am happy things worked well,” Karthik said during the launch of Evocus (Black Alkaline water) on Friday.

RCB has helped me achieve a few important things: Dinesh Karthik

He added that his role of a finisher in the RCB setup boosted his confidence and morale.

“The fact that I did so well for RCB has helped me achieve a few important things. It is a journey, and I am really enjoying it. With every new day, there is a different challenge. Some challenges you overcome, and some challenges are harder so it has been interesting so far,” Karthik pointed out.

If your role is defined clearly, it becomes relatively easier to prepare and focus: Dinesh Karthik

Currently, team India is on top of the ICC T20 rankings, and Karthik is confident of the side doing well at the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

The 37-year-old feels having a clear-cut idea of his role in the side has brought out the best in him.

“Be it for the state (Tamil Nadu), IPL or national side, if your role is defined clearly, it becomes relatively easier to prepare and focus. One has to adapt and thrive, and I am really enjoying the challenge,” said Karthik.

Adding to that statement, he said, “With the kind of talent we have, I am confident of India doing very well in the World Cup”.
