India’s young batting star Tilak Varma has suffered an injury scare just weeks before the T20 World Cup 2026, after undergoing surgery for a medical emergency in Rajkot. However, in a recent health update, Varma appeared positive.

The 23-year-old was representing Hyderabad in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy when he complained of sudden and severe pain.

He was immediately taken to Gokul Hospital, where scans revealed testicular torsion, a condition that requires urgent surgery.

Tilak Varma brushes off injury scare

According to reports, Tilak Varma underwent a successful operation and is now stable.

The incident forced Tilak out of Hyderabad’s remaining matches in the tournament and also ruled him out of the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, which begins later this month.

The news initially raised serious concerns about Tilak’s availability for the T20 World Cup, which starts in early February.

However, the batter himself ended speculations by sharing his health update on social media. Varma thanked the fans for their overwhelming love and prayers and added that he will be back on the field sooner than people might think.

This is a clear hint that, contrary to the speculations, Tilak Varma expects to recover in time for the T20 World Cup 2026

However, a final call will be taken when the Indian team management is fully convinced that Tilak is fit, as rushing him would jeopardise his future.

Tilak’s coach dismisses World Cup fears

In addition, Hyderabad coach DB Ravi Teja also played down the injury scare and dismissed speculation about Tilak Varma missing the T20 World Cup. Speaking to Cricbuzz, the former Andhra cricketer clarified that the surgery was minor and there is nothing serious to worry about.

According to the coach, Tilak could have even played Hyderabad’s next match, but the team decided not to take any risks since they were already out of knockout contention.

"It was a very minor surgery. There is nothing serious or alarming about it. He will be ready in three to four days. He would have been ready to play today. We did not want to take chances since we had no chance of qualifying for the knockouts," Teja said.

Ravi Teja also expressed confidence that Tilak will be fit in time for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

"Tilak is with the team currently, and he will travel back with the side to Hyderabad. I personally think he should be fine for the Twenty20 series against New Zealand," he added.

Possible replacements if Tilak Varma misses out

While the medical updates are encouraging, the Indian selectors are still keeping backup options ready in case Tilak Varma is unable to regain full fitness in time.

According to reports, Shubman Gill is unlikely to be drafted into the T20 squad, with selectors feeling it would be awkward to include the current Test and ODI captain and then possibly drop him if Tilak returns mid-series.

Instead, the focus is on players already in the white-ball setup. Shreyas Iyer, who was recently declared match-fit by the BCCI CoE medical team, is one strong option.

Iyer has already returned to competitive cricket and scored 82 off 53 balls in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, showing no signs of discomfort.

Other possible candidates who could replace him might include Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan, depending upon what role Tilak might play for his side.
