T20 World Cup 2024 To Commence On June 4, ICC Announces a New Format

As per emerging reports, the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup will commence on June 4 next year in West Indies and the United States. As reported by ESPN Cricinfo, the tournament will have a 25-day span, with the final scheduled on June 30. Furthermore, the matches will be conducted across ten venues, to be shortlisted soon by the ICC after discussions with the concerned boards, Cricket West Indies and USA Cricket. 

The report also reveals that an ICC team has inspected some shortlisted venues, including Lauderhill in Florida, Grand Prairie stadium in Dallas, Church Street Park in Morrisville and Van Cortlandt Park in New York. While Lauderhill has hosted international matches, the other three venues are yet to get the international status, a mandatory criteria to stage the World Cup fixtures. 


T20 World Cup 2024 Format

The format of the ninth T20 World Cup will be entirely different from its previous edition. The group-stage will see twenty teams divided in four groups battle it out, with the top two teams from each group proceeding to the Super Eight stage. These eight teams will further be split into two groups, each comprising four sides. The top two teams from each Super Eight group will qualify for the Semi finals.

Ten teams, including the hosts, West Indies and the USA and the top eight teams of the 2022 T20 World Cup- India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka had already qualified for the main event, while Afghanistan and Bangladesh will participate owing to their T20I rankings. 

Meanwhile, Ireland, Scotland and Papua New Guinea have made it to the event, thanks to their performance in the regional qualifiers. The remaining five slots, including qualifiers from the Americas (for one spot), Africa (two spots) and Asia (two spots) regions will be determined very soon.
