The Indian World Cup-winning squad returned to New Delhi from Barbados on Thursday morning to a hero's welcome, their historic win on June 29 ending an 11-year ICC trophy drought since the 2013 Champions Trophy victory under MS Dhoni.

However, amidst the celebrations, renowned journalist Vikrant Gupta, Managing Editor of Aaj Tak/Sports Tak, found himself at the centre of a social media storm.

Vikrant Gupta slammed for holding T20 World Cup trophy

The controversy erupted after a picture of Gupta holding the T20 World Cup trophy aboard the flight went viral. Twitter was flooded with comments slamming Gupta, with users bashing him mercilessly.

The journalist's credibility took a hit as netizens dug up old videos and posts to highlight what they saw as his hypocritical conduct.

Netizens were quick to point out Gupta’s past statements, where he adamantly claimed that the World Cup trophy should only be touched by World Champions.

The backlash was fierce, with many criticizing him for his previous harsh critiques of Indian players leading up to the World Cup. Some fans even expressed that Gupta had no right to touch the trophy.

Meanwhile, the Indian team marked their homecoming with an exclusive breakfast and 'Chai pe Charcha' session hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, celebrating their monumental achievement.

Next on the agenda for the Men in Blue is a grand celebratory journey to Mumbai. They will travel in an open bus victory parade, starting at Nariman Point to the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
