In the latest developments, Pakistan selectors are deeply concerned about the form of the struggling keeper, Mohammad Haris, and could be tempted to remove him from the keeping duties if his form doesn’t improve. Reportedly, the selectors have distanced themselves from playing XI selection, and this decision solely lies with coach, Mike Hesson and captain Agha Salman.
Why Mohammad Haris’ spot in danger?
With no place for Mohammad Rizwan in the Asia Cup squad, Mohammad Haris was given the captaincy duties for the tri-nation series. However, it has been a nightmare tour for the Pakistan batter, who was also criticised for his slow strike rate comments on Babar Azam.’
In the last 10 innings, he has only accumulated 52 T20I runs, with an average of 5.77, and he has only managed to go past the double-digit mark twice in the last ten innings. As per a report by CricketPakistan, if Haris' performances do not improve, the selectors would take away his keeping role and opener, Sahibzada Farhan will take over the duties.
Reports stated that the selectors are angry that Haris has been given a longer rope despite consistent failures, and giving Abrar Ahmed a late chance despite stellar performances.
Mohammad Rizwan still in keeping contention
As per the same reports, Haris will be given a few more matches to prove his worth, but if he fails, the selectors won’t shy away from going back to Mohammad Rizwan. The regular keeper-batter in the team, Rizwan, was snubbed from the Asia Cup team due to poor strike rate, and now his successor, Haris, is yet to win a game for Pakistan.
Pakistan’s first plan of action would be to look for a keeper for the future; however, if that move doesn’t pay off, they are willing to go back to Rizwan for a short-term keeping solution.
