The Pakistan cricket team is currently focusing on the Asia Cup, but once the tournament concludes, the entire narrative will shift towards the Test series at home against the South African side. The two teams will play a two-match Test series, and this will be the first assignment for both sides in the new WTC cycle.
Babar Azam in the Test scheme of things for Pakistan
The Pakistan Cricket Board will host a 20-day training camp in Lahore before the Test series, and interestingly, Babar Azam will also attend the camp from Tuesday, September 9. The former captain was snubbed from the Asia Cup squad due to poor performances, but the right-handed batter will be a part of the camp.
This indicates that Babar is in the Test scheme of things for Pakistan, and is most likely going to be included in the squad for the South Africa series. The other notable names who would take part in the training camp are:
Abdullah Shafique, Ali Raza, Azan Awais, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Huraira, Mohammad Salman, Rohail Nazir, Sajid Khan and Shamyl Hussain.
Why is Rizwan's name not mentioned in the list?
According to Sohail Imran, GEO TV Sports Correspondent, Mohammad Rizwan and Naseem Shah have not joined the training camp as they have prior commitments with the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The duo are most likely to join after the finals on September 21, or when their side gets knocked out of the tournament.
This indicates that Pakistan does see Rizwan and Naseem as two key players in the Test team, alongside Babar Azam. Reportedly, the Asia Cup-bound players will be unavailable for the camp as the marquee event ends on September 29.
