Pakistan announced a young side for the Asia Cup 2025 campaign, and not so surprisingly, they left out Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from the team. The duo were under pressure in the T20I format, and their poor strike-rate didn’t help their cause as the Men in Green demanded aggressive batters in the team.

The same squad that was selected in the Asia Cup took part in the ongoing tri-series tournament, and before the event commenced, one of Pakistan’s star batters, Mohammad Haris, indirectly took a dig at Babar’s strike rate, and urged him to improve it to be selected in the T20I squad.

"No doubt, Babar and Rizwan have delivered many performances for Pakistan, but when you want to set a benchmark, you need to give chances to the juniors," Haris said. "Babar Azam needs to play fast in T20," he added.

However, in the tri-series, Haris' comments backfired as Haris failed to deliver the goods.

(Haris in UAE tri-series)

  • Just 17 runs in 3 matches, with an average of 5.67 and a strike rate of 89.47 defined Haris' tri-series performance. While almost all the other Pakistan batters delivered the goods, Haris failed to live up to the hype created by him.
  • In-fact, he trolled Babar, who, in his last 10 T20I innings struck at more than 140.

Haris' poor performance in the last 9 T20I innings

His scores in the last 9 T20I innings read: 4, 0, 5, 6*, 4, 2, 15, 1, 1, with an average of 5. In 26 T20I matches so far, Haris has just crossed the 50-plus run mark once, which showcases his inability to play longer innings and match-winning innings.

Will Pakistan replace him in T20Is?

The Asia Cup squad has already been announced, but if Haris fails in the remainder of the tri-series. There is a good chance that he could be dropped, with Sahibzada Farhan taking care of the keeping duties. Moreover, in the first two tri-series matches, Haris batted at 7, which showcased that Pakistan does not have trust in him.
