In a significant development, Australia's primary fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood have been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy. Cricket Australia confirmed the development with a post on its official Twitter handle this afternoon.

Cummins and Hazlewood have failed to recover from their respective injuries. It's worth mentioning that Mitch Marsh has also been sidelined from the tournament, while Marcus Stoinis has announced his ODI retirement and hence won't participate in the Champions Trophy. Therefore, Australia will be forced to make four changes to their squad for the Champions Trophy.

Why Cummins And Hazlewood Won't Play Champions Trophy?

Australian captain Pat Cummins opted out of the ongoing Sri Lanka Tests owing to family reasons. Later, it came to notice that the bowling all-rounder was doubtful for the Champions Trophy after being unable to recover from an ankle injury he sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood has been struggling with injuries for quite a while now. The ace speedster was ruled out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy midway, with Jhye Richardson replacing him in the Australian Test squad. However, as he continues to rehabilitate from the calf strain, the experienced pacer won't be able to play this year's Champions Trophy.

Which Players Can Replace Cummins And Hazlewood?

Although Cricket Australia has yet to announce replacements for three injured players and Marcus Stoinis, it's believed that Cooper Connolly, Beau Webster, Sean Abbott and Xavier Bartlett are the frontrunners to enter the Champions Trophy squad, thanks to their impressive returns in the recently concluded Big Bash League.
