Star, BCCI contemplate IPL 2022 start date

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction done and dusted, the excitement of the fans have gone beyond the roof as they cannot wait for their favourite franchise-based competition to begin.

While it was earlier reported that the upcoming season will mark its arrival on March 27, plans are yet to be finalised as Disney Star has proposed to start the tournament a day earlier. With March 26 a Saturday, Star wants the tournament to have a double-header in its initial days, which is not possible if the competition starts on March 27, reported Cricbuzz.

"We understand that a Saturday start helps the broadcaster to kick-start the league with a bang with three matches in the first weekend. A Sunday inauguration would not permit that. The BCCI and the broadcasters were in discussion over this and eventually it could be on March 26," Cricbuzz quoted a franchise official as saying.

Earlier, the franchises were to be given the schedule of the upcoming season by February 20 but as the BCCI is still pondering upon the opening day, it has pushed things a little further.

The league is likely to be played in four venues in Maharashtra. However, there has been no official announcement from the BCCI.

Star has prepared a window of March 19 to June 17 for the commentators and notified them to be available in this period.

"At the onset, wanted to check with you on your availability for IPL 2022 on the world feed broadcast. So request you to please provide your availability not only for the tournament but probably say minus 8-10 days from the start date and plus five days from the end date to be safe, so effectively from 19th March 2022 to say June 7, 2022 (sic)," Star sent a mail to the commentators.

James Faulkner caused deliberate damage to hotel property: PCB

All-rounder James Faulkner left the PSL 2022 after there was a payment dispute between him and the board. "I apologise to the Pakistan cricket fans. But unfortunately I've had to withdraw from the last 2 matches and leave the @thePSLt20 due to the @TheRealPCB not honouring my contractual agreement/payments. I've been here the whole duration and they have continued to lie to me. It hurts to leave as I wanted to help to get international cricket back in Pakistan as there is so much young talent and the fans are amazing. But the treatment I have received has been a disgrace from the @TheRealPCB and @thePSLt20. I'm sure you all understand my position," he tweeted. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Quetta Gladiators then issued a statement and called Faulkner's allegations baseless and further added that he won't be a part of the PSL events in future. "In the seven years of the HBL Pakistan Super League, no player has ever complained about the nonfulfillment of the PCB's contractual obligations," the PCB said. "It has been unanimously agreed by the PCB and the franchises that Mr James Faulkner will not be drafted in future HBL Pakistan Super League events," the statament also added. The things got so heated up during a discussion with a PCB official that Faulkner threw his helmet and the bat on a onto a hotel chandelier from the lobby floor balcony. The all-rounder later paid for the damages before leaving for the airport. "Prior to his departure on Saturday morning, Mr Faulkner caused deliberate damage to the hotel property and as a result had to pay damages to the hotel management. The PCB later also received reports and complaints from the immigration authorities that Mr Faulkner had acted inappropriately and abusively at the airport," the statement from the PCB read.
