With Rohit Sharma and now Virat Kohli retired, Team India in Test cricket will enter a new era under the guidance of a new leader. As per reports, the team management are considering appointing Shubman Gill as the new captain ahead of the all-important England Test tour.

In the next couple of days, he is set to meet Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir to formalise the road ahead in the game's longest format. However, if Gill gets appointed as the new leader, he could enter an unwanted Test list, comprising of MS Dhoni and KL Rahul.

Gill set to join MS Dhoni in unwanted list

In the last 30 years of Indian Test cricket, there are only two captains who have led in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) by having a batting average less than 30.

The two mentioned names are MS Dhoni and KL Rahul and now, Gill is set to join the list. While MS Dhoni averaged 28.37, KL Rahul currently has an average of 29.60, and Gill, if he becomes the skipper will have an average of just 25.70 with the bat in SENA countries.

Why Gill is chosen as the next Test captain?

With Rohit Sharma retiring and Kohli doing the same on Monday, the management had very little captaincy choices to pick from. Plus, they are looking at the future and Gill is at the prime of his career and if everything goes smoothly, he can easily lead for the next 5-7 years.

Plus, his excellent IPL captaincy is also one of the major reasons why the board decided to go ahead with Gill in the game's longest format.
